In Nov '68, Greg Allman visited his ill brother on his 22nd birthday; delivering a bottle of Coricidin & the new debut album by Taj Mahal. 2 hours after leaving, Greg was phoned - Duane saying "Baby brother, baby brother, get over here now.

On arriving, he found the pills emptied nearby, the container cleaned of label & being used to play slide as Duane did 'Statesboro Blues' (the Blind Willie McTell song from 1928, covered by Taj.

10 months later, the debut 'Allman Brothers Band' was recorded. 'Idlewild South' followed in Aug '70 and 'At Fillmore East' in Mar '71. 38 years ago, Oct 29 '71, Duane died in a horrible crash of his Harley in Macon, GA.

In fond memory of Skydog, here's a link to 'In memory of Elizabeth Reed' from the Fillmore East in '70:

I sure do wish I could've stayed longer, but I loved life while I was here...

The last time he played in Atlanta, I helped him carry his guitars in. He was getting out of a cab with what I assume was a groupie. With one arm around her, he had his hands full with 3 guitar cases.

"Can I help you with that?" I said.

"You sure can brother. I'm in your debt. But you can't stay backstage."

"That's cool. I just want to see the show."

"He's with me." Duane told the security asshole and the smiling Atlanta cop who had witnessed my repeated attempts to somehow get pass them.

That was for the afternoon show. When it ended, I hid in a bathroom for about 3 hours.(I had a copy of Lord of the Rings with me) So I got to see both shows. That was in July. He passed later that October.

Derek is the real deal. He has inherited the mantle and is keeping the spirit of Skydog and Jerry, among others, alive and expanding upon it. He is my favorite living guitarist. I'm psyched to be seeing him again next week here at a small theater in CT--from the third row. Can't wait to watch his guitar work up close.

Very cool, Lit.

We enjoyed a white-hot set from Dickey Betts (and his son Duane) at MagFest. Hard to believe Dickey is 65....

I would love to see Dickey again too. As great as Derek and Warren are, it is hard for me to hear "Southbound" without Dickey and not feel as though something is missing. Did he play that by any chance?

Embarrassed to say I don't remember for certain, but they played for over 2 hours so it was probably in there somewhere....we are looking for a torrent to download so that may jog my memory.

Gotta love the Fillmore East album cover too, actually taken in Macon and the band is laughing because duane held up the photo shoot buying some 'trouble' across the street which he has in his hand

What's that old saw about the brightest flames burning fastest? Makes one fearful for ridiculously good young talent you see today, but lifestyles are a little "slower" these days... What hits me in my advancing years is how much my heroes put out in such a short timeframe - I've literally spent longer LEARNING the slide parts for these tunes than some artists' entire carreer span. Oh, and Coricidan (and clone) slides break when they fall outta your shirt pocket to a concrete floor - I'm Craftsman deep-socket (like Lowell) all the way!

Lowell George - another GREAT slide player, done gone too soon...

Sigh.

Anyway, here's another shot of Duane, probably taken at A Warehouse in NOLA:

I will highly recommend Sidney Smith's web site to yall also (where that shot came from...)
