View Full Version : Congo Square Rhythms festival...Y'all come
Delta

We (my studio-mate and I) have been accepted as vendors to the Congo Square Rhythms festival next month! There's a good chance we'll be at the Treme Gumbo festival too.
We're excited about Congo, but we're REALLY looking forward to Treme. It will give us a chance to do some of our stuff that's not in the galleries, like clothing and festival chairs and painted ground covers. We're listed as Bottletree Studios (insert Lit joke here) when we work together, so come see us!

Congrats Delta. Would love to be back in town for either one of those fests, and would be great to see your work. Not likely for me this year though--spent a few chits last weekend. Sell well!

Since both of those fests are through the NOJHF organization and they accepted us for these 2, we may just work up enough courage to apply for Jazzfest next year. We have about a month to decide.
Why the hell wouldn't you? Whaddya got to lose?

Whaddya got to lose?
The little bit of self-confidence I've managed to gain over the last few years. Hell, it took me this long to even tell you all we'd gotten in Congo Square!
If you don't go out on a limb, you don't get the fruit. (Yes, there are other ways to get the fruit, but you get the point). Go for it. Absolutely no good reason not to.
Hey congrats Delta!!! and I agree with Lit...go for it!!!

Thanks for the votes of confidence everybody!
The jurying thing is nerve-wracking, to say the least, but we're 90% decided to apply and just deal with the stress.

now c'mon - what's the absolute worst thing that could happen
a) they tell you no
b) they say yes

Hey, y'all -
Here is what's going on that weekend:
On Saturday, Nov. 14, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation will host the latest in our Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture Series. This will consist of a symposium entitled, "Congo Square: Crossroads of the Afro-Atlantic World." It will take place from 1 pm to 6 pm at the Jazz & Heritage Center. Admission is free. Speakers include Ned Sublette (author of "The World That Made New Orleans"), Robert Farris Thompson of Yale University (probably the pre-eminent African culture scholar in the US), Alex LaSalle of the New York-based band Alma Moyo (and purveyor of the most authentic modern replication of the bamboula rhythm that can be heard today), plus local folks including Luther Gray of the Congo Square Foundation, Connie Atkinson of UNO, author Freddi R. Evans and Herreast Harrison (widow of Mardi Gras Indian Big Chief Donald Harrison and mother of Donald Harrison Jr.). The last hour will consist of a drumming workshop - with cocktails!
On Sunday, Nov. 15, the third annual Congo Square Rhythms Festival will take place at Armstrong Park from 11 am to 6:30 pm. Performers include Ensemble Fatien (featuring Seguenon Kone, Dr. Michael White, Sunpie Barnes, Jason Marsalis, Matt Perrine and Margie Perez), Bamboula 2000, Zion Trinity, Moyuba, several African dance ensembles, a Mardi Gras Indian "battle" and an opening drumming circle. Admission is free.
Don't forget - on Saturday, Nov. 21, the Jazz & Heritage Foundation presents Fiesta Latina, a celebration of Latin music, food and culture, taking place at Zephyr Field. Performers include Los Hermanos Rosario from the Dominican Republic, Grupo Fantasma from Austin, TX, Otra, Fredy Omar, Vivaz, Rumba Buena, Mariachi Agave and more. Admission is free, but parking costs $5.
The second annual Treme Creole Gumbo Festival will be Dec. 12-13. Performers on Dec. 12 include Kermit Ruffins. On Dec. 13 we'll have Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews with his band, Glen David Andrews with his band, and James Andrews with his band - plus an all-star jam featuring all three Andrewses. It includes the fourth annual Jazz & Heritage Holiday Bazaar, where you can purchase official Jazz Fest t-shirts and posters from years past, plus gumbo cooking demonstrations and a large crafts fair. Admission is free; it takes place at the Jazz & Heritage Center (1225 N. Rampart St.).

Oh my gosh, we had SUCH a good time at this last year! I don't see Shamarr's name on the list, that was the highlight for us last year!

You're hired! There was a reason you were the first call I made. Supposedly, there is some sort of Cliff Notes for applying coming out on Nov 3. We'll check in with you as soon as we see what that is. I can't thank you enough for the offer, too!

New this year, the Jazz & Heritage Festival and the Arts Council are also teaming up to create an “Applying ONLINE to Jazz Fest Crafts” webinar. The webinar, covering all the basics that artists need to know before applying, will go live at 12 noon on Wednesday, November 4th. Participants can join from their home computer and chat live with Jazz Fest staff. Following the November 4th presentation, the webinar will be available for free streaming on demand from www.nojazzfest.com and www.artscouncilofneworleans.org .

Trust me...y'all were mentioned at the very outset when I applied to Congo. After the "crafts lady" came over and read this thread, she commented to me that they'd have a wildly successful festival if nobody but THs showed up!
