View Full Version : Paul Sanchez 9/5/09 download!
Holy cow, I'm a little late to the party on this. I guess it got lost in the other threads and some other new music for me, but after finally listening to some samples early this morning and downloading immediately afterward, I don't think it's gotten nearly enough props here. First, thanks to Stynger, the recording quality is impeccable. And the ability to download in lossless format--for only $5.99!--is truly remarkable. There are two shows' worth of music and Paul's stories here! Unbelievable. I realize that this is intended to be the first in a series of live THR releases, but this is going to be a tough one to follow. The only thing better would have been seeing these shows live--especially the book reading/show combo. Paul's shows are always intimate, but these performances are special even among them.
THR has put out a lot of great records, all of which are very good values. This, however, is a ridiculous value. If you don't have it already, get it now:

Excellent sound and great download
Hey Byron, as an aside, while I was checking out the crafts at B&BBQ Fest last weekend I struck up a conversation with a photographer (named Chris I believe) who has a lot of great photos of Mardi Gras Indians, as well as a self-published book of the photos. He said he met you at a festival in Florida and had lots of nice things to say about you (I tried to tell him otherwise, but he wouldn't have any of it). In any event, he asked to be remembered to you and to say "hi" from him. He also suggested that THR consider supporting his book as one of our projects, but it didn't quite seem to fit within the scope of what we're doing.

I'm open to doing a book with him.
Well he's definitely open to it too. And the Mardi Gras Indians are certainly part of the musical heritage and culture of New Orleans, so I guess it's not really outside our scope. I also like a lot of his other photos--particularly the black-and-whites.
On the photo book issue, Jerry (again, last name momentarily forgotten) who does a lot of photos of New Orleans musicians also had a booth there. I know he has donated some photos for the raffle. His collection is astounding. He does not have a book, and I actually asked him about whether he ever considered doing one. I was so overwhelmed at the number of amazing photos he had that it would be impossible for me to purchase one or even just a few--never mind paying for proper framing. So a book would seem like a logical and economical solution (like what I have done with Michael Smith after breaking the bank for a few of his originals). Anyway, Jerry hemmed and hawed about the time and money it would take, and suggested that I just rotate my art collection instead. If we do consider these types of projects, he's another one who would be at the top of my list.

Chris has a great picture of Tuba Fats under the Preservation Hall. It was damaged in Katrina so he took a photo of it. Thats the one I have. Chris is a supporter of the Threadheads and it would be great to do a book with him.

There are now three avenues with which to pursue projects:
Threadhead Records, Inc.
Threadhead Records Foundation
Mystery Street Records
On the photo book issue, Jerry (again, last name momentarily forgotten) who does a lot of photos of New Orleans musicians also had a booth there.
Jerry Moran?
Which of the three, iyo, is most appropriate for projects like a photo book?
BTW, I remembered Jerry's last name--Moran. He's also a Threadhead: Native Orleanian. I believe many folks here know him. Here's his site:

Thinking out loud here, and maybe this causes more problems than it's worth, but I think a book combining both of their photographs could be an amazing coffee table piece. There needs to be a new Michael Smith, and these guys are as good or better than any others I've seen. And as much as I love Michael's work, now there will be photos from others that don't have the back of his head in them...
Thinking even further down the road, expanding upon Bacon's mention yesterday of Paul doing some sort of one-man show telling stories of New Orleans while slides show behind him; I could see a great multi-media production along the same format, featuring several THR artists, both audio and visual.
PS: Swag, didn't see your post first. But yes. Thanks.

Foundation will soon be putting out a solicitation for applications for music projects. No reason we can't do something like that in the future for books. But a photo book could also go through THR, Inc.....I mean, we've already done one book, and we're doing a DVD project...have I announced that one yet?

And even flac files for just $5.99... just did the deal and waiting for it to start downloading....
You are really going to enjoy this Steve. Even closer to the one man show you envisioned after listening to Farewell to Storyville. And a nice story involving Michelle Shocked too.

See Chris, I told ya those flacs would be a hit!

I'm open to doing a book with him.
Maybe he could apply for a future grant from the THR Foundation

yeah, maybe that's one of the next things for the Foundation in 2010
I assume you have his contact info? He gave me his card, so let me know if you don't, or if you want me to follow up with him.
