Apparently there is a two-alarm blaze in the Southern Candy Store in the French Market.

The evil voice in my head thinks it must smell like pralines.....

This article says the fire was confined to the underhang. Hope they didn't get too much damage.

Perfect example of why I think fire sprinklers are so important.

It's great that a lot of *residential* construction is now including them, too!

THIS IS A VERY SCARY thing in my mind regarding the French Quarter. Old buildings, beautiful as they are but not all up-to-date with proper fire precautions. YIKES...

Didn't that part of the market just recently reopen after being closed for renovations?

I am pretty sure it's in an older part of the Market, in between the two patio restaurants (Gazebo Cafe?) that both have bands.
It could have been a LOT worse!

We got into town this morning. The entire block is closed down. Most of the damage seemed to be on the 2nd story.

We passed by last night (yummmmmm, dinner at Fiorella's), and it didn't look too bad & the Gazebo cafe was open. Fire chief this am said the most damage was contamination to food by water, no structural damage.

Good to hear that there's no structural damage.
