I KNOw the grids have a lot of filling up to do but I started making my list of possible shows I want to see and I ran into a festvet kind of problem.
First night in town-first Friday- I want to see the 2am soulive show because I will have missed them at the fairgrounds.
Second night in town-I want to see Vidacovich, Houser, Dillon and Skerik at 3:30am
And Sunday night the Stanton Moore trio at midnight.
This could really affect my ability to get to the fairgrounds.
FOMS!

My solution is the post fest nap! Eat dinner at the fest, sleep from 7:00 - 10:00, see music till 6AM, and sleep 'till 10. That's a full 7 hours of sleep!

So much music, so little time. If I miss Deacon John out at the Fair Grounds then hope to catch him 2nd Sun. evening. Night shows can only help with a bad case of FOMS.

How much advanced planning is needed to see the night shows you want to see? Are tickets involved? Can they be ordered in advance? Can you go early, pay the cover or whatever, leave and come back at showtime?
Help a rookie out, please and thank you.

Hey Now Lester, at least for Tipitinas and House of Blues shows, advance tickets are certainly the way to go!!! Howlin Wolf, Southport Hall shows can USUALLY be taken care of at the door, but in general, if there is a show that you really want to see, there is no reason not to get it in advance. If something else comes along, you can always sell (or just give away- "miracle") the unwanted ticket and still go with the flow, but still have the bases covered!!! Good luck, you will LOVE Jazzfest!!! Matthew

The biggest problem with the night shows on fest days is dead legs. Last year was my first fest. On the last night, I made it halfway through Jamakazi at Howlin' Wolf (concrete floors). This year, I'm definitely shooting for club shows the night before first weekend, maybe Dr. John at HOB or Henry Butler at HW, and IAC on the night after. Also looking at Soul Rebels at Cafe Brasil on Friday. It's pretty easy to overbook, especially if you have to stand. I'm counting on Snug to post some good shows during first weekend.

My solution is the post fest nap! This is my kryptonite at fest, once i'm down it's usually till the morning. I am cautious about even going to my hotel room, which is needed for the shower and change, etc. but I stay as far away from the bed as possible, and it's an in and out stop. I'm a big fan of a nice cool pool dip to refresh.

O.k., this might be considered a dumb ?, but I'm gonna' ask anyways...
On May 4 (2nd Friday) at the Howlin' Wolf, are there 2 different shows between NOSC & the Bayou Rendezvous, or if you buy 1 ticket, will it get you into both shows???? I know usually ya' need 2 tix, but this appears to be an overlapping show.

I don't usually prepurchase because my plans have a tendency to change when in nawlins. But if you are absolutely sure you wanna see a show, go for it!
jhp, do you need a doc visit? Take care of yourself!
And that reminds me. If the underdawgs are playing somewhere besides the patry, they will definitely be on my list.

I think that when the New Orleans Social Club is finished, they will clear the room, then after everyone is out, those who have a ticket to the B.R. will be allowed back in. I dont think they will let those at the Social Club show stick around for the Rendezvous for free.

Just bought tix for Piano Night... and will call is our only option to get the tickets. No problem, but for US and Canada will call is no charge (God love 'em) but if you're anywhere else in the world they ALSO add $2.50 per ticket for the convenience of collecting your tickets yourself from the bloody venue!

this one is for my blood bruthas and sistas that know what it's like to think you are not going to make it back to your hotel room because your legs are giving out...
i've gotten to where i go to jazzfest primarily for the night shows...
i applaud those that are preplanning their night time activities, but i might suggest you would be foolish at this point to do so UNLESS you have a show or two you definitely want to catch...
sounds like funkjunkie is my kind of fester....fyi, i passed on catchin' soulive around here recently because they are a bit different than they have been in the past....i'm sorry to have to say that, but it's true...however, catchin' Eric Krasno with Dumpstaphunk on the second weekend at Tips is somethin' you should definitely plan...
for those of you lookin' for the funk, find the time to catch Dumpstaphunk...saw them at Tips last year (had seen 'em befo) and that show was probably my fest highlight of the past five years.

Last year I did a lot of advance planning. Festing all day, dinner at Brigtsen's, K-Paul's, Irene's, then off to Rock and Bowl (Thurs/Sat) followed by Donna's for late night, or HOB (Fri/Sun for Etta James and Dr John shows). I found myself literally falling asleep on my feet for the last two, even though the shows were great. Now, I'm getting on in years, but some pace and flexibility might be in order. Depends on your level of endurance, I guess ;-)
Having said that, a few years ago I did not get adavnce tix to see the Neville's at Tip's, and got shut out at the door. Just goes to show, it's always something.....

As Warren Zevon so eloquently put it: "I'll sleep when I'm Dead" I love to put a night show schedule together to see how much I actually make of it. Sometimes it is dead-on, Sometimes not even close. Lester, picture this. You go in the Rocknbowl front doors and immediately start the climb up the stairs. At the top, you look straight ahead and see the lanes that run all across the back of the club. Look left and you're looking at the bar. Look right and you see the stage against the far wall. Bathrooms are on that wall too. www.rockandbowl.com So if you have a lane, you can use it to dance and/or to bowl!

My husband says that my FOMS (fear of missing something) has never been this intense, this early. He can't wait for me to get on the plane so he has a few days peace before he flies down.....
He said my longing for jazz fest is getting worse each year - and if I hurry up and get it together I wouldn't be in this position because we could move back - like we're supposed to. (excellent sentence, even ending in a preposition - very nice). I now have a deadline - no more than 18 months.

Yeah, I'm somewhat in the same boat (anticipation-wise). If Denbear doesn't get his house back in his divorce proceedings (in progress) - he's seriously considering taking his half of the settlement and moving back to New Orleans and I told him, I'd move there to be with him.

Also, I have it on pretty good knowledge that Boom Boom Room Presents out of San Francisco is going to be doing a whole lotta shows at the Blue Nile on Frenchman St. The venue has been closed since last JazzFest for structuiral repairs post-Katrina, but BBRP-SF is renting the venue out for both weekends -- and the Daze Between -- and putting on shows just about every night. I know that New Mastersounds (great funk band from Britain) are playing first weekend, and Dr. Lonnie Smith is doing 1 or 2 shows as well. As soon as I get the full schedule from my buddy who runs BBRP, I'll send it off to jazzfestgrids.com - should be announced soon.

I agree, it is hard to do my nighttime wishlist yet, though it is great seeing everyone's "first draft", giving some new ideas to what I might want to check out on various nights.
Shows I have already bought tix for (since I won't miss them and ya gotta buy tix in advance for weekend Tips/HOB shows):
Thu 4/26 - MOFRO, Anders, Eric Lindell @ Tips -- this show has 3 of my favorite bands all in one, and should feature a lot on onstage cross-pollination between the bands. My buddy Chris Mule from Eric's band is the best unknown guitar slinger out there.
Sat 5/5 late night - Greyboy AllStars @ Tips -- another longtime favorite, can't think of a better way to do my last JF allnighter of the season than with Karl, Robert, and the guys -- look for many special guests at this one.
Also the Snooks/Tab combo at Rock'n'Bowl must come into play...
One thing that I am REALLY psyched about -- this year will be my first JazzFest (since 1988) where I *LIVE* in NOLA, having moved back to da hometown last September. So no worries on trying to fit it all in on a 4 or 5 day trip. Plus, many siblings coming in town for first weekend, and many old friends coming in town for second weekend.
Shaping up to be a banner year for Fesssssst!

BBRP has been doing shows during JazzFest for 6-7 years, usually putting together great "supergroup" shows that do unique performances. Some examples are:
Dragon Smoke - over the years this has featured 4 of Ivan Neville, Eric Lindell, Stanton Moore, Robert Mercurio, Jon Cleary, Eric Bolivar and a few others - originally done at the Dragon's Den, more recently at Blue Nile
Dr. Lonnie Smith, Idris Muhammed, Will Bernard, Donald Harrison Jr.

It'll be interesting to see what lineup they put together for this year's shows.

Thanks for the info Yangety. I'll keep an eye out for your suggestions when those shows are posted.
I'm doing my best this year to see new music this year. I'm horrible about going to what I know and love.

I HATE being called Ma'am....but I LOVE being called Mah Baby.....especially by Ms. Lena..melts my heart every single time! :)
Yeah, I'm not big on "Ma'am" either - although I am getting to the state of decrepitude where I like it better than "Miss" . . . unless you add my name to the end of that. My friend Darren's nephews are SO cute - they call me Miss Lisa, which just charms me no end - but they was raised right.
I, too, absolutely LOVE it when Ms. Lena refers to me as "Mah Baby" - it is indeed hawt-melting! :)

YYR, the BBR is great!! I get their e-newsletter. There's also great shows that the Independent (also in S.F.) puts on - like the Mardi Gras bash with Ivan, George, Leo a week and a half ago. A bunch of we threadheads were there - so if they put on equally groovin' shows during Jazzfest - that would be off the hook!!
:D

I know Superfly is announcing their nighttime shows tomorrow (Tue Mar 6), though seeing Gov't Mule isn't really my idea of a prime JazzFest experience...
Lawd have mercy! I forgot about the Blue Nile shows!! We are in some serious FOMS trouble man! lol
It's a good pain yes? :)

Can someone enlighten me on what the bold above has to offer musically?BBRP is resppnsible for the vast majority of New Orleans focused shows that take place in San Francisco. They have a venue of their own and also use other local venues for great new orleans shows. I would give them a high rating in terms of the quality of the events they put on and the quality of the music at the events. They know who their target audience is and they know how to bring a great lineup of talent to cater to that audience.

See now, I like it when southern folks call me honey, sweetie or darlin' (I particuarly like that last one) . . . maybe it's because I'm half-Southern myself.
However, I really hate being called "dear" - it just comes off as so patronizing.
Here in Cali, dude is now used universally - regardless of gender - it's become like "aloha" in Hawaii. It can mean many different things depending on the vocal inflection. Dude!! Duuuude?? Duuuuuuuuuude . . . :D
I absolutely love when someone calls me dude. A female friend calls me that all the time and it just cracks me up.
Dude has definitely become genderless!

Here's one that I see a great deal now on the web: "loose" instead of "lose" . . . grrrr.
Additionally, yes - I guess we are grammar elitists - sigh. :o
My mama is rolling over in her grave at the thought that speaking correctly is somehow elitist...

Rollin' in their graves eh? Yep - all forefathers and mothers spinnin'....however, I assure you - my students receive a favorable rating of 'f' for forget that - when it is turned in on a paper.....
I'm not going to 'chill, go with the flow, accept IM language or some other variant' in a formal written document - but goodness try to explain that to some students today !!!!! i may not be capitalized on a chat board, but it sure as hell is in a formal document.
(gee, have we stumbled upon one of my pet peeves? The inability to write formally when required - or understand when that requirement is invoked???? hmmmmmm........
