View Full Version : Where's Cyril?

Maybe I missed some Neville Bros news, or maybe he's just out sick, but ... Cyril wasn't with the Nevilles last night, at the Clearwater Jazz Holiday.

Anyone know anything about this?

What was odd, too, was that there was no mention of his absence, as if nobody would notice. I sure did. They sounded good, but it was hardly the same.

Well, he played at the Blues & BBQ Fest and then the Marva Wright benefit here yesterday....

Yeah when I think of blues, Cyril Neville isn't exactly the first thing that pops to mind.

Not sure about the Fest - we were at the Dome watching the Saints kick ass against the Giants and didn't make it to the Square yesterday. At the Marva benefit, he played the drums with Ivan and GP Jr. on a couple of songs, and then sang with the Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars (Tab, Anders, Monk, GP Jr., Jumpin' Johnny, Vidacovich...).

NOT AT ALL!! all the brothers (except maybe Charles??? ) have missed gigs for various reasons over the years ..Art because of health Aaron because of other commitments or when Joelle was ill ..Cyril because of gigs with his own band....Never seemed to create much of a bump in the gig and I actually have enjoyed some of those missing brother gigs the most ..(well not the ones without Art )
I am happy that Cyril is having such success with the blues effort he had a successful northeast tour this past year and was well recieved at the LMF and other venues during jazzfest.
I believe he is actually working on another project in the blues based on this success ..
:) it is all good !!!

It's where he is now.

Nevilles show was great last night. Sorry I missed you, Philip. Going to Leonard Cohen tonight? We'll be there, 9th row center.

Don't ya think it would get boring to stay the same? The Nevilles are some of the most creative cats around...just doing what moves them.

Love it all.

Guess I'll have to respectfully disagree.

I understand the impulse for the Nevilles or anyone else to explore new musical horizons, and I'm happy that Cyril is discovering success with his own thing.

But, IMO, an audience expecting the Neville Brothers, and a festival paying for the Neville Brothers, ought to get Aaron, Art, Charles and Cyril. Unless, of course, there's a health issue.

Hi, Paul. Yeah, I liked the Nevilles, too. Nope, not making to Leonard Cohen. We're getting ready to go to Magfest on Thursday. Are you going?

No on Magfest. Make sure you see Daddy (or the Will Kimbrough/Tommy Womack thing on Friday).

Working on my costume for the Freaker's Ball at Skipper's Friday night.

OMG did someone on this bored actually say RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE!! how refreshing and delightful!!! .and OK yes I can see your point. I have seen the Nevilles so often over the years that for me the changes that happen when someone is missing are sometimes interesting as the set lists can sometime get a little stagnant ..it sometimes gives the band members a little room to stretch in some fun directions but I can understand that if your chance to see the Nevs is few and far between I might too be disappointed ...especailly without advanced warning.
But that is how they have been for years? I do wonder how the festival organizers felt about it though now that you have made me think on it.

I have Cyril's blues album and, quite frankly, was disappointed in it. I expected it to be rawer and edgier than it was.

I agree. Parts of it were overproduced and sounded "fake", for lack of a better term. What I mean is that it sounded like the music was electronically-generated as opposed to "real" instruments.

Makes sense. Checked the liner notes and Brian J played guitar, bass and percussion on some (if not all) of the tracks. A little hard to get that spontaneous blues feel with that much overdubbing.

Saw Cyril at Skipper's in Tampa this summer, the new material was much better live.

Heard some of Cyril's Blues and BBQ set and didn't find it particularly bluesy... his wife sang "Piece of My Heart" but the other things I heard were very much of the Neville's nature... "Talkin' Bout New Orleans" etc... 'course, I didn't hear the whole set, so I can't give a full assessment.

and I have to respectfully AGREE with Jazzjones: If people are paying to see the Neville Brothers, they should get the Neville Brothers, barring medical or other unavoidable absences.

I'll be respectfully neutral on the issue as I enjoyed the show, although Cyril was missed. I'd also like to respectfully note that it was a free show (in fact a 4-day free jazz festival, though no other performers attracted me to Clearwater).

As sacreligious as it might sound, if I had to see the Nevilles less one, I would prefer it to be Aaron.

Don't get me wrong: I'm a MASSIVE Nevilles fan and I truly love Aaron's voice, but the rest of them are what really makes it for me. It would also give me a small amount of perverse pleasure to see all of those disappointed soccer moms in the crowd who are amazed that Aaron actually has any brothers, let alone ones that kick ass. All too often I've seen a Nevilles show watered down (or is it dumbed down?) to appeal to the lowest common denominator types, and a show filled with just Poppa Funk, badass Cyril and soulful Charles would be amazing...

Respectfully yours, Rossvegas.

Well, the nomenclature "Neville Brothers" isn't specific as to HOW many brothers will be performing at any one time or in any one place. There were indeed Neville Brothers there in Clearwater . . . sans one.

well, technically, sure.... but it's the name of a performing group. Like, oh, the Rolling Stones. If you buy a ticket to a concert by that group, it's reasonable to expect all the members to be there, barring extenuating circumstances. and having a competing gig is not an extenuating circumstance.

OMG Ross and I thought that was my own personal dirty little secret ....jeepers...I have been pushed shoved jostled and on one occassion actually attacked by those soccer mom Aaron fans.
When he starts to sing now I try to just move aside quickly !!
That said if I hadn't liked the song Don't Take Away My Heaven in 1993 I would not have gone to see the Nevilles and been blown away moved to discover more New Orleans music and I would not be riding this crazzzzy fabulous wonderful ride I soo enjoy with all you groovy people !! So I guess I respectfully owe him :)

I must confess my post was mostly as a smartass, but more seriously . . . your point would be true of ANY act, whether it's Fleetwood Mac (which no longer has Christine McVie), Journey (which no longer has Steve Perry) or Cowboy Mouth (which no longer has Paul Sanchez and Mary Lassiegne).

Things change, individuals move on or follow different pursuits and well-known acts aren't going to change their names to "The Neville Brothers, Minus Cyril" or "Journey, But Not Steve Perry". . . they're going to maintain the brand recognition/fan identification.

So while I was disappointed not to see/hear Christine McVie when we saw Fleetwood Mac here at the Arena last spring, I still really, REALLY enjoyed the band that was there and the music.

I think the disappointment and upset has more to with thwarted expectations . . . which is natural and understandable.

hey, smartass is a default setting for many of us around here! and proud of it. ;)

in any case: yes, but it was public knowledge that Christine was no longer touring with Fleetwood Mac (she hasn't toured with them and for all intents has not been a member for many years now). You had that info before you bought your tickets. Cyril didn't leave the band, it was not announced to ticket buyers that he wasn't to be part of this concert. He just didn't show up. If you'd gone to that Mac show and Stevie Nicks simply wasn't there, with no word about it, you'd be a little upset I expect.
