We've really enjoyed Jim Lauderdale, Peter Rowan (and the Vassar tribute - a MagFest/SpringFest tradition) and especially Donna the Buffalo!!!
I'm comme ci, comme ca on The Duhks . . . I am looking especially forward to seeing Cornmeal again (as I only heard them at the Mulberry Mtn Harvestfest in Arkansas), and many of the other excellent acts (Moonalice, Holy Ghost Tent Revival) at Suwannee this Fall!

Hi, NOLA, I'll be at Magfest, with wife and kids in tow. Maybe we can connect. Cell coverage is bad there - do you know where you'll be camping?

Camping Spot SP-39, in a rented Cruise America RV.
You should be able to tell we are from New Orleans. ;)
Hope to meet you there!

how was magfest? weather, toonage, new friends, etc...
Weather: Mostly good, some light rain, some humidity - then lovely cool temps in which to enjoy a campfire . . . :)
Toonage: Didn't see Jessica, Roger Rabbit or any other toons there.
New Friends: Made some great new festival friends when passing out the pudding shots! ;)
All-in-all it was a wonderful MagFest and we really enjoyed the music (The usuals: Peter Rowan, Jim Lauderdale, Donna the Buffalo; Newer folks: Dread Clampett, The Believers, Holy Ghost Tent Revival)!!! :D

What she said. Pudding shots are a great ice-breaker/conversation starter.
Musical highlights for me were Dickie Betts & Great Southern, and the Lee Boys/Travelin' McCourys collaboration. I also enjoyed what I heard from DADDY (Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack) and Great American Taxi (new project of Vince Herman from Leftover Salmon); unfortunately I didn't manage to catch a full set from either group.
Sunday with Peter Rowan hosting “Vassar’s Bluegrass Jam” followed by Jim Lauderdale, Scythian, the Duhks and Donna the Buffalo was over the top. I think it was scheduled to run until 7:30 or maybe 8:00 but they kept calling more folks on stage and didn’t finish until after 9:00….
We left the park in decent shape for all you Bear Creek-ers...
Nice! This fest seems to have a lot of the same artists we get at Rhythm & Roots. The Lee Boys/Travelin' McCourys collaboration, Great American Taxi, Scythian, the Duhks and Donna the Buffalo have all appeared there at least once in recent years.

I am envious of the fun you must have had.
I am hapy to be away working again but have not seen a good band for several weeks, and that wont change for a few days yet.
How did Dicky look and sound? a friend watched him a while back and said he played well but did not interact with the audience that much.

I thought Dickey looked fine and sounded great. I thought he interacted well with the audience - he talked about some of the songs, introduced his son Duane when they played one of his songs, and later introduced the entire band. He seemed very happy to be playing there and I think they played for close to 2-1/2 hours (pushing the start time of the last set of the night back a bit). I'd guess maybe 15-20 min. each for Blue Sky and Jessica; shorter version of Ramblin' Man as the encore....I think Lisa is looking for a download as there were lots of tapers in the crowd.
Between the Blues Festival, the Marva benefit at Rock-n-Bowl, and MagFest, it has been a GREAT 2 weekends of music for us. :D :D

Lit, FWIW this is a VERY kid-friendly camping festival. The time of year (which is most likely dictated by the weather) may not be ideal for school-age kids, but that doesn't seem to stop the fine folks from Florida and southern Georgia from bringing them along. I guess they (correctly) believe that musical education is worthwhile too.
Anyway, there is lots of room for kids to run around and be kids without irritating anybody too much. I only saw one rolling soccer ball knock over a beer (serious party foul), and one adult get run over by a runaway Radio Flyer piloted down the slope by a 3-year old (could've been worse if he hit another kid, I guess). [Plus, it appeared to me that a stroller was the best way to get contraband into the festival area....]

What about Cornmeal? They were on fire: Think bluegrass on steroids.
Yeah, really.
And - they're from Chicago?!
I'll jump in and second NOLA & Kitten's comments - had a real nice time, very good weather (although it was kinda hot Thurs/Fri) and especially enjoyed:
New Riders
Col. Bruce Hampton's Quark Alliance
Holy Ghost Tent Revival
Blueground Undergrass
Moonalice
plus those already mentioned... (like Daddy, Peter Rowan, GAT, etc.)
And: I think I finally 'got' the Lee Boys. It took the McCoury's (and Col. Bruce) to drag me along, but it finally happened!!
My only regret - not spending enough time with Threadheads! It's hard enough seeing all the fine acts, plus yer friends who you only see at Festy's... now I wanna fit my Threadhead friends in there, too!
Ah well, it's great to be connected. We'll get our alt-Fest meetups dialed in - yeah you right!
P.S. I did not make it over for the Sunday jam, but my campmates who went came back raving about the pudding shots !
Dudes... :D

Tornado Rider is outrageous fun. Metal/Punk Rock played on cello, with a bass guitar and drummer. Must be seen/heard to be believed. Definitely worth checking out.

Yeah. To the best of my recollection, it was (at least) Max and DJ, two young men who are fine folks... I can't say enough good things about Max, and it was DJ's first camping trip with us... 'Tho I suspect it won't be his last. :D
I'm pretty sure he won the Sloonerville Happy Camper Award this past weekend... :p
