Imagine that!??

Louisiana Justice Institute (10/15/09) - On Tuesday afternoon, October 13th, the Louisiana Fire Marshal made an unexpected, surprise visit to, and inspection of Dr. Martin Luther King Charter School for Science and Technology, ordering the closure of the high school campus for 30 days citing alleged fire code violations. This news is significant because the school was the site today of President Barak Obama's first stop on his visit to New Orleans, and because of the nature of the purported violations. King Charter School Principal Doris Hicks said she couldn't believe such a thing could happen on the eve of a visit to the school by the President of the United States. "We expanded our campus two years ago and have been safely operating the high school in trailers since then without any problems. Suddenly (they say) we're endangering our children? " Dr. Hicks said. "Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our students."
The Louisiana Fire Marshal reports directly to Louisiana's republican Gov. Bobby Jindal. The alleged code violations included having enough fire extinguishers, but purportedly the wrong size, and failing to have sufficient ingress/egress to an empty building.
Dr. Austin Allen, a pro bono architect for the school and professor at the University of Colorado at Denver, indicated the cited problems were in no way life threatening. "We were able to resolve most of the issues within 24 hours; I can't understand why the fire marshal set this 30 day penalty," Dr. Allen said. King Charter School can only hope this incident actually exposes the extreme school facility crisis being experienced in districts throughout Louisiana. Louisiana Justice Institute Managing Director and King School attorney Tracie Washington expressed frustration with the situation. "I can only hope Louisiana's Fire Marshal and Governor Jindal will care about all the children in Louisiana, not just those being visited by President Obama. Interestingly, neither offered assistance to King School in mitigating any safety issues for our students, which certainly raises questions their motives, " Ms. Washington said.
The Presidential visit to King Charter School was a complete success, despite this Fire Marshal interruption.

Unsurprisingly pathetic.

Sorry, I think this story is a stretch in this supposed connection to Jindal. If we need to hold a politician accountable I would prefer to do so with a more clear connection to his or her wrong doing. After all the charter school concept is championed more by conservative leaning politicians than left leaning ones. What would it benefit Jindal to take the lime light off of a charter school which actually looks good for Louisiana, and for its current leader.

There are plenty of pathetic things to hang on just about every politician in Louisiana (and in the U.S.) that are a little more reasonable.

I also applaud the President for defending Jindal at the rally. I think it was in bad taste for the crowd to boo him. If it was Blanco, perhaps that would be a little more justified, in that the delay in help, supplies, and government aid falls heavily on her ineffective leadership during the federal flood. But to boo her would have been in bad taste as well.

You really think she just thought this up on her own? That I think would be a stretch!

It would NOT benefit Jindal to have the school closed. It is a school that shows the success of the state, that would be good for the governor.

BTW, I think this was a very successful visit for the city. I hope the next time the President comes that he'll stay a little longer.

Great to see Louisiana elect a great governor. Finally someone who is honest for the state.

Really? The fire marshall at the state level reports directly to Jindal. Not for nothing, if I were the fire marshall and I was going to close down the school that the President was speaking at I would let the guv know. If I were the guv, I would make sure the closing was justified. This seems petty at best.

For the record, Jindal has not been a friend to many here outside of the Baton Rouge office, especially among the teaching ranks. I believe out of self-preservation he has latched on to the congressional delegation for storm, levee and wetlands issues but little else.

As far as booing, I agree. That was not called for. Silence would have spoke louder volumes. I have always been taught to respect the office, even if I do not respect the man. So again I agree with you on that one my friend.
