Hey everyone....I am planning my first jazz fest with a group of people and am curious about the hotel situation. The jazz fest site seems to indicate that the hotel special rates have not been released yet. Is there a point that they open up these special rates? When do they open up? Are the hotels holding out to release rooms in this fashion or is everyone booking all of the rooms in other ways? Obviously we want our group to stay together and we would prefer to be in the french quarter. (Us and everyone else I am sure) Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks so much!

Last year, the special rates arranged by the fest were released mid-December.

The rates arranged by the Fest itself (the ones Swag is talking about being relaesed in December) are not always (or even usually) the lowest rates that will be offered..........

Swag has a site that is THE definitive resource for getting a great deal on hotel rooms for Jazzfest, (or other occasions) and it is certainly worth checking out.

Good Luck, Matthew

fyi - most of the best deals are non-refundable. so make sure you have committment from your group. you dont want to be held financially responsible for someone who changes their mind or has to back out.

Saturday, April 24th through Wednesday, April 28th - $79 for a 4 star downtown hotel. If you add Friday the 23rd - price bumps up to $99 per night. Does not show as available for the whole thing. Every extra day added to the end added more money per night.

It seems like every year I book earlier and earlier and get better hotels for less. This year, I got 2 RT tickets plus 5 nights at the HOliday Inn Express that's just across Canal from the Quarter for $950. I figure the least I've ever seen RT flights between Albuquerque and NOLA has been $300 each, so it sounds like a smokin' deal.

But last December, I found an even better Hotwire deal for $1050. Of course on that site they don't tell you what hotel you've got until you actually pay for it, but it turned out that the room was at the Intercontinental - a 4 star hotel!

The key is to keep checking. I used to book exclusively thru the JF rates, but when you combine hotel and flights, you can really save a lot on the Pricelines and Hotwires and Orbitz, etc.

This year I've kept checking to see if the prices have slipped down at all. Not even close. The package I was looking at before I found the Express was the Holiday Inn Superdome (which is farther from the quarter and according to reviews, not as nice) was $490 per person about a month ago. Same package is now $660 per person. But ya never know when the next Intercontinental-type deal could come along.

Today Hotwire has a 2 star French Quarter Hotel available from 4/23 through 5/3 for $54 per night. It shows as a boutique hotel with a pool. No idea what it could be.

It's been suggested to me that the 2* might be the St Marie Antionette. Sister property to the Saint Louis, so that would be consistent with both showing up on HW at the same time. That's still unconfirmed at this point.

We stayed at the Marie Antoinette in 2007. We were not thrilled but not horrified either. Could have just needed some work after K (hopefully it was done) - the carpets weren't very clean, the pool was dirty. The staff didn't seem to really care and it was a little noisy. The bar downstairs was good for a quiet drink. It was fine for the price and if they've made improvements very fine for the price out there right now.

Easy Click usually has these two properties as well. Might be a good cross reference.

The Marie Antoinette was Bob Dylan's favorite hotel to stay at when he was living in New Orleans while recording his haunting, if somewhat understated album "Oh Mercy".

I would love to stay there sometime, and although I never get flights and hotels before the line-up is announced, I am itching to book something soon.........

Fest Fever arrived early this year here in Salt Lake!!!

I really hope so---I am planning on using my remaining Delta Skymiles for my flight, and so as soon as the lineup is out, I will decide on which week will be the most suited to my musical tastes, but unless the 1st weekend is light-years better than the 2nd weekend, I will almost certainly do my traditional fly in early tuesday (day of the Patry) and then fly home the following tuesday evening.

As far as hotels go, I am usually at one the larger chain hotels (Crowne Plaza, Hilton, Radisson etc.) but maybe a smaller, more unique property would be nice for a change, (55 bucks is a great rate this early) and of course being in the heart of the Quarter instead of the CBD is always nice...........

Did you read that in his book MM?

I am back to finishing that book up and am reading the section from NO now. I loved the story about going to watch Irma play one night.

He also has kind words for Brian Stoltz in the book.

Yep, he mentions the Marie Antoinette a couple of times in "Chronicles-Volume One".

And for him giving props to Brian Stoltz (and also Willie Green of the Neville Brothers) made me respect ol' Bob Dylan that much more, as I have said many times that Brian Stoltz is the worlds finest "unknown" guitar player.

McGregor, since out tastes in music are so similar, lets try and make a point of meeting up at Fest and having a beer.............

Anyone else see that hotel prices just seem higher across the board for 2010? I don't see any killer deals out there, especially for the Quarter. We generally stay eight days, first Sunday through Monday after fest, and have good luck booking good hotels in the low 100s for each night, at most. And we usually book this time of year, if not already. Not seeing those deals as much this year, and some hotels are apparently sold out already or are keeping back rooms?
I figured with the recession, this wouldn't be the case, though I am happy there are apparently plenty of people like us -- figuring out a way to make it happen.
One other thought. Is it possible that, because of the economy, a fair number of people missed this year and vowed not to let that happen again in 2010?

i have vague recollection of posts about a convention 2nd weekend. that can affect hotel prices.
some folks got some good deals months ago.
did you check bookit.com? - not sure what they might still have.
the priceline/hotwire deals are likely not over, stay close over the next few weeks/months and be ready to commit.

The official Jazzfest negotiated hotel rates are posted at http://www.nojazzfest.com/travel/hotels.php (at least, I think this is the 2010 list, since the list includes the newly reopened Roosevelt).

While many hotels on the list have a uniform price, there are several that are more expensive for 2nd weekend That may be an early indicator that 2nd weekend demand will be heavier this year.

As usual, there are no screaming bargains on the list, at least not downtown or in the Quarter, but there are some decent prices.

I'm supposed to be speaking at a conference the second weekend, but it's not a huge one....and I'm definitely NOT going to be speaking. :>)

They called me and were all excited: "Ross, you won't believe it....the CARE Conference is in New Orleans this year during Jazzfest, so perhaps you can speak to us while you're there!" I thought about it for 2 seconds: "Hmmmm. So you want me to leave Jazzfest on the final Sunday, take a cab to the Hilton, put on a suit and coherently talk to a room full of people. Ya, that's not gonna happen."

Hey Now Greg!!!

I am like you, starting to get the itch to book a room, but I am also determined to hold off and wait for a while.

Since I started Festing (1997) this is by far the earliest I have ever grabbed my flights (of course they have never announced the line-up this early either) and I have not typically booked a hotel until march or even early april, and have always been able to find some exceptional deals by just being a little patient and waiting until something great comes up. (and when the bargains finally come do along, jumping on it pronto)

I am curious on how big this years crowds will be, (with the economy still so stagnant) and how financial concerns will impact room rates.

Finally, you mentioned that you have never used Hotwire or Priceline---Be aware that once you go ahead and use either of these sites to book a room or a flight, you are locked in tight!!! They are unwilling to change or cancel a purchace in virtually all but the most extreme (as in life or death) situations, so when you use them, be sure to check all the details twice before hitting the button.........

When you see rates that really look good, please let me know, and I will be sure and do the same!!!

Wow, that has always been an absolute favorite show of mine!!!

"Comes A Time" is one of the Grateful Dead's most poignant songs, so achingly beautiful in the way that Garcia would infuse the music with such depth of emotion when playing it...........

Comes a time when the blind man takes your hand (note 1)
Says "don't you see?"
Gotta make it somehow
On the dreams you still believe
Don't give it up
You got an empty cup
Only love can fill
Only love can fill

Been walking all morning
Went walking all night
I can't see much difference
Between the dark and light
And I feel the wind
And I taste the rain
Never in my mind
To cause so much pain

From day to day
Just letting it ride
You get so far away
From how it feels inside
You can't let go
'Cause you're afraid to fall
But the day may come
When you can't feel at all

Those last four lines give me the chills every time. Great song.

Hope to enjoy a cold one with you first weekend. I'll buy you a beer for a change !!

Just email Swag using the link on the http://jazzfest.swagland.com/bidding.html page. Be sure to include the details (check-in & check-out dates, star level, zone(s), and the date of the bid, if it differs from the date of the email).

If you check the previous year histories linked at the bottom of that page, you'll see that the deals tend to be fleeting and may pop up anytime. For example, a first weekend bid of $123 was rejected in January, but in March, a bid of $70 for the same dates was accepted.

No guarantees, of course. Having a big convention in town hurts, for sure. But there were big conventions coinciding with Fest in the past (before K), and there were still deals for the patient and the persistent. Booking a cancel-able backup, as you did, is always wise.

No, that isn't it, but I would be happy to lend some hot air to the discussion on digestive diseases. Sounds like a gas! :>)

The one I was asked to speak at is the CARE Conference (The Cooperative Association of Resort Exchangers), and they usually attract around 500 attendees. The problem with this conference (for me) is that virtually all of the attendees work within the resort industry and they are all hunting down the exact same accommodations as I am. I highly doubt that I'll be able to get a timeshare exchange for the 2nd weekend....

First- thanks for this tid bit of information :D

Second - I called the Drury Inn and spoke with Silva in reservations and confirmed those prices of $119.99 for Wed, Thursday and $99.99 for Friday and Saturday (plus taxes and fees) for a king non smoking room. However, if you have a AAA card the price drops to $107.99 for Wednesday and Thursday and $89.99 for Friday and Saturday (plus taxes and fees). Parking is ONLY $15.00 per day, free breakfast and I read on line that drinks are free from 5-7 at night.

The best part of all of this is they will hold your room with a credit card number and will not charge you until you check in and you have until 6:00 pm the night of arrival to cancel. I figured why not? Better to have a back up plan (especially if I don't have to pay for it now) if no other hot deals come through.

I also asked her how many rooms they had left...they have 4 rooms with 2 doubles non smoking (I think these are a little cheaper?) and 15 king rooms non smoking.

Hopes this helps some folks! :)

That is thoughtful of you to post this info---I went ahead and tried to make a res. (just for backup so far) for fri-sat-sun of the 2nd weekend, and the rate quoted was $109, not $99 per night...........

Is there some special discount you asked for?

Thanks, Matthew

Requesting 2 adults instead of 1 seems to add $10 to the rate. For King bed rooms, I also see a handicapped room that's cheaper than the regular one. And Sunday night is higher than Fri or Sat...

It's funny, but if you only need a room from 4/27-5/4, that same room (3 star French Quarter) prices out at $159 per night...........

If you only need it from 4/27-5/1 THEN it is back down to the $59 rate.

I am still determined to wait until the great deals show up again, but with the conventions scheduled for the second weekend, I am a little bit anxious.

You are right, the price IS very reasonable!!!

If I could get it for just the time I am in town (4/27-5/4) for the $59 per day rate, I might well go ahead and book. (The hotel is apparently the Marie Antoinette, which seems to be Bob Dylan's favorite hotel in New Orleans)

The problem is that to get the $59 rate you need to book for the whole Fest period, not just the second week.

If I knew someone who was only going first week, I suppose we could split the reservation..................

Actually, the 3* in the French Quarter is the Chateau Bourbon (I think it was the Chateau Sonesta) which houses the Red Fish Grill. I just booked it (thanks Swag) for the whole enchilada at $62/night for 4 people. It's $59/night up to 3 in a room but I figured for an extra $3/night what the hell. This way if someone decides to come at the last minute, we're ready. I've camped (tented) the last 3 years but am really looking forward to a (hopefully) soft bed and air conditioning. Is it April yet?

Interesting. It looks like this hotel shows up with as non-smoking on the amenity list, and does not show as a boutique. If you see a 3* in the FQ, the amenities should let you know which is which. (In past years, the most common Hotwire 3* FQ hotels have been the Holiday Inn FQ and Holiday Inn Lemoyne, which show neither Boutique nor non-smoking).

Canandalia, let me know your check-in and check-out dates, and I'll get this result posted to my site.

If it's like last year, most of the good deals on the Hilton Riverside didn't pop up until late March or sometime in April. Patience. And nerves of steel.

It seems to me that pricing at various hotels suggests that they expect this year to have fewer available rooms than in past years. I don't know what that means for last minute deals. As you said, we'll see.

We stayed at the Riverside last year both weekends(through Prriceline), so we called them about a month ago to see if we could get the same deal. They told us they were sold out for second weekend. This year we went through Hotwire and got the St. Louis for $57

I have Drury reserved in case.....and I know that in years past-the Hilton was telling people on phone the rooms were about $300 when a friend was booking on priceline for $65.00..so a person can only hope.

But usually-I wouldn't think a convention would spill over to other hotels like Omni or Astor Crown Center or InterContinental. Heck, I would go for a room and good old Queen & Crescent.

not sure if this is the Big one, but Digestive Disease Week is there May 1 -5.
and it sounds pretty big. seems there has been medical conventions many other jazz fests. but the numbers were never like the year CA World held their international meeting during second weekend.

so many businesses have cut way back on travel, and conventions are often considered a perk.

i cannot believe how inflated 2nd weekend prices are.
the question is who is going to book these rooms at 200-450 per night?
how many rooms are already booked, and how many duplicate bookings are people sitting on?
i know there is a convention, but experts are predicting NOLA tourism in 2010 to be down from last year. and if this is due to the BNA's i'm not sure i want to be inside the festgrounds on some of those days.
i just dont see the rates staying that high. try to book something you can cancel, then hold out for those low rates that may not hit until april. (of course that just makes your part of the overdemand problem, but you need to protect your interests).

I highly doubt that I'll be able to get a timeshare exchange for the 2nd weekend....

i do believe the DIGESTIVE DISEASE WEEK convention is what is causing the 2nd weekend rates. from their website "How many people attend DDW?
An average of 16,000 GI professionals attend each year, plus an additional 2,000–3,000 exhibitors." this is an international meeting, and it looks like spouses/guests are encouraged. so they make be taking 10000+ rooms.

this is there hotel list/prices:
http://www.ddw.org/user-assets/documents/PDF/02_attendees/2010/Hotel_Map_Rates2010.pdf
they appear to be slightly lower than those on nojazzfest.com

their early registration cuts off april 2nd, i would expect any rooms that are left will be discounted at that time. if reservations are slow, some might come on line sooner. but i imagine the hotels had to commit to hold rooms for them.

One of these years, we're going to have to look into what Computer Associates did during the Fest - they rented an entire cruise ship to be their hotel. We don't have nearly enough Threadheads to get a huge Carnival Cruise boats, but perhaps a small luxury yacht? Failing that, we could always do what I did in high school for road trips: rent a big ass U-Haul cargo truck and turn it into a motor home!

The Delta Queen is not for sale. It is docked in Chattanooga, and is currently used as a floating hotel. We had an incredible night there in November. The owners are trying to convince the Congress to re-pass the exception for it to be used as an overnight sailing vessel. It's leased with the proviso that if it can sail overnight with passengers again, the lease is revoked.

we stayed there for festwedding in november, and got a killer rate of $89 per night with the third night free. and it included free parking.
location was great (but its barely on the border of the garden district). staff was awesome. room was very cute, but rather small. bathroom was also small with a strange/old shower. but there was a second sink outside the bathroom with a long counter - great for lots of stuff.
i seem to recall a dorm size fridge, probably a microwave (but that might vary by room). the room seemed clean (there was a crack in the long marble counter but it didnt bother us). they were renovating some of the other rooms during our stay. we were on the first floor, on the street and it was quiet enough. breakfast was nothing memorable, but its free. wifi was difficult to pickup in our room, but worked fine in the 'courtyard' (more like outdoor hallways). i did not see an elevator for the upper floors.
i would not hesitate to stay there again. but i dont think i'd pay $189.

the odds are always the same here. if no one matches the winning number it rolls over. so if they sell 1 ticket or 100000000000000000 tickets, you have the same chance. if more than 1 ticket matches the numbers, you have to split the pot.

i saw your fest dates.
what are you doing monday & tuesday between weekends?

I live in Mobile so I typically drive back to do laundry, take a long hot bath, repack and re up my supplies for the following weekend. One of these days, I'm going to schedule to stay the whole week as I bet I'm missing some good fun.
