View Full Version : I Love Bourbon Street

I knew after the thread about those who care to see Bourbon Street when they visit New Orleans, that I would need to post on what I really love about it.

The first time I walked the French Quarter, we took Bourbon Street straight through on the way to Snug Harbor. It was interesting to walk it and certainly held my attention for 10-15 minutes. Scantilly clad girls were nice eye candy while the blaring music sucked. That was enough of that for the trip. Our walk back on Royal was MUCH more enjoyable. Hell, we even spent 45 minutes chatting with a local couple selling tours (a great tour it was too, well worth the $30 per).

But, the next morning, we walked Bourbon st. again. It was beautiful. The streets were full of life. People out hosing down there front walks, delivery drivers dropping off the morning bread orders, locals leaning over their balcony railings calling out good morning to each other while holding their morning coffee in hand, the beauty of the wrought iron glimmering in the morning sun, the flowers hanging like rainbows from the balconies. It was a nice slow relaxed walk, like a beautiful morning after a stormy night. It was one of my favorite experiences from that first trip.

I hear ya, Frosty. Bourbon St. at night & Bourbon St. in the morning are two completely different things! It is a very special place that you definitely don't experience when you're only going there at night to drink.

Good post, Frosty.

Even though it is what it is, I still have affection for it.

oh Frosty, I completely agree about Bourbon St. by day. I had nothing to do the Thursday after Mardi Gras so I took a cab to the quarter by myself and found myself on Bourbon after an hour or so. Grabbed a daquiri and started walking, from one end to the other. It was wonderful. The best part was walking right into the Treme Brass Band playing on the street outside of this little courtyard festival event. Uncle Lionel in all his splendor. I sat on the curb, drank my daq, and had tears in my eyes when they played Wonderful World......I can NEVER hate Bourbon...it's an integral part of New Orleans. It's the big draw for tourists and that means money for the city.

I'll be there at least 2 nights with both sets of newbies I have coming in each weekend. I love to see it through their eyes. Kinda makes it fun....the music sucks but the great company and watching your friends eyes light up is priceless :)

Are you talking about the street music or bar music that sucks. Because I have always found good music in the bars. Like csoul, Big Al at the Funky Pirate.

It is a strange and fascinating experience to do Bourbon at night and in the day. Can't wait. A group of us are returning this year to Jazz Fest after several years away.

gotta also give some props to Fritzel's German Jazz Pub on Bourbon. it's down away from the thick of things near the gay bars. Great place that my friends and I stumbled upon at Jazzfest '05 with some great jazz

There is a little NO music at a few bars but most of them are blasting covers of Rick Springfield and Joan Jett. You're right though about Big Al being down there but the music scene in NO starts on Frenchman.

I do have to say, I was on Bourbon in November and was SHOCKED to find a Karaoke bar. WTF???? I never saw that before....or if I did, I was too drunk to notice. But I have caught some really great music down there. You just have to be in the right place. There is some that doesn't suit my tastes, but hey, you just mosey on down to the next place and see if you like that....eventually you're bound to find something you like.....unless you're determined not to.

I love Pat O's too...even the piano bar :)

The music in most of the bars makes me nuts....I actually counted how many times I heard Sweet Home Alabama on the 3 hour tour of Bourbon St. clubs with my friends in November...5 times! That was too much...but, people were dancing and having a blast sooooooo.....I always have the option to leave if I don't like it. And yeah, Fritzel's and the Funky Pirate are cool. I've even caught the Hot 8 and other good bands in some clubs...it's pretty random at times.

No matter how noble my intentions may be ,somehow I end up at 3 for 1 happy hour at The Krazy Korner dancing to that band playing "Sweet Home Alabama" for the 3rd time and having an incredible time.
I drunkingly threw a 50 instead of a single in the bands tip jar my first post K trip and the bandmembers still greet me like I'm a celeberty.

Johnny, the Krazy Korner is my FAVORITE bar on Bourbon St. Listening to that band play all the classic rock tunes with a rub board in the band is the best! The 3 for 1 beers are pretty cool too :)

Keep in mind that the FQ and Bourbon Street is a big part of what lures new folk to the City... and she needs them. Let folk discover the rest of the joint (or not) as is their want, but the street is doing its job.

Big Al was our first taste in NOLA and the first time I had the nerve to approach a performer for a chat and a CD signing... diets be buggered - big people rock!

I recall moving to NOLA as a 17 year old and being completely enchanted by Bourbon. It really didn't have so much to do with the strip clubs and easy access to alcohol (although that definitely helped!); it was about sitting on the curb outside of these great little jazz clubs and listening to Dixieland bands for free. I would think about my friends who were still just hanging out in Manitoba, and I knew that I was somewhere VERY special...

Lots of history on Bourbon St. Sadly, most of it is just that, but if you raise your gaze just slightly above the crowds head, you can catch little bits hovering like ghosts!

awww, I like that Blitz...I think for as much as she is tawdry, I love Bourbon St. for what it stands for and for how long it's survived. There has to be some respect for that for sure. It's definitely not my first choice for where to hang out but it can be fun when with good friends who love to get silly and crazy :)

I always walk on Bourbon a few times every visit to NOLA. I don't hang out there, but I love seeing it at all times of day and night. I get a kick out of watching everyone acting with abandonment.

One of my fond memories from fest 2005 was walking down Bourbon with some friends (we were on our way to Acme), and stopping in to use a bathroom at one of the sleazier bars. They made us buy drinks so we sat and listened to this very tall black transvestite in a white-colored cowgirl outfit, singing the Patsy Cline songbook. Then we broke their bathrooms and skedaddled.

Sometimes you see stuff on Bourbon you just don't see anywhere else.

Besides, you gotta get some HUGE ASS BEERS!

My only issue with Bourbon Street is that so many people who haven't been to New Orleans define the city by their opinion that street. I feel that many people judge New Orleans by what they hear and read regarding the shenanigans on Bourbon. We all know the city is so much more than that, but somehow the city gets disabused by the false perception that New Orleans is nothing but booze, titty bars and tourists exposing themselves. It's not that there aren't fun things to do on Bourbon, or some good food and bars, but New Orleans is so much more than that.

How many of us would still love New Orleans if there was no Bourbon Street?
My hand is up.

Plenty easy if you're adequately liquored -- haha! Actually at the Cat's they fill in with plenty of background vocals so everyone sounds fine :)

Enjoy that snow, it's really been coming down!! I'm actually headed back home on the 7th (we've got a public hearing on land my parents are trying to divide and give to us, Bozeman zoning! then hopefully I'll get in some skiing in Jackson).

I also made a walk by myself to Rue Bourbon one early AM and just strolled among the residents and workers before the madness that is Bourbon St and it is truly something to behold...similar to walking down the strip in Vegas in the early hours...a true before and after shot...must say it was my first stop to NOLA and I go back there at least once during every visit.

sadly, many of the good live music venues in the quarter have closed. the r&b club, the blues club where I used to see Bryan Lee all the time (although he couldnt see me!), dont even get me started on old absinthe house. It seems like less and less live music and more and more frozen daquiri booths every time I visit.

Every year no matter how many times I have been there I always get a rush of exitement every time we step out of the hotle and step foot on Bourbon. you guys are the bestus!

Bluesmama, there is a really great cam at Liuzza's by the track that everyone parties at during JF. They have it on the site along with the other cam's as soon as JF starts. Now that is fun to watch!

I hear ya, Frosty. Bourbon St. at night & Bourbon St. in the morning are two completely different things! It is a very special place that you definitely don't experience when you're only going there at night to drink.

On my very first trip to New Orleans in '91 with 2 friends, of course the first place we headed was Bourbon st. Our first full day in town was Palm Sunday. We were staying at the St Charles guest house and took the streetcar to Bourbon St a little before noon. I sat down on the curb to watch bands playing in the street and, I swear it was like a religious experience for me, just to be there! Over the course of the next 12 hours or so, wandering around the FQ, Jackson square, a couple of fabulous meals, a "shoe-shine" and several drinks later, we experienced the dream-like transformation of Bourbon st. from a lazy peaceful funky Sunday morning place to a wild drunken spree, with barkers shouting things like "Pulsating sluts in action- fun for the whole family!" when we had enough of that scene we hopped in a cab and headed back, completely blown away by that transformation. The next day we needed to chill out, so we rented bikes and rode around Audobon park.... that's the thing about New orleans, there's so many different sides to it. It takes a while to see and feel it all, and there's something for everyone.

and now I'm with some of the others - it's not my favorite part of New Orleans, but I do like to walk it at least once every trip just to experience it.

Funny story...way back, when Disney came out with "Hunchback", they held the premier here in NO. They had the Quarter cleaned up and the sewers disinfected and smelling like Disneyworld. It hasn't been like that since...although from what I read, the new sanitation people are doing a great job!

Yes please check it out.I'm a avid Bryan Lee fan.I rember JF05 I was walking down the street and heard him from the street. I figured it was just a Cd but I stuck my head in the club anyway and low and behold there he was rockin the night away. I ended staying there untill I started falling asleep standing up.

Re: the two machines, as I recall Jeff got me one, then another friend got us one for our wedding (wasn't on the registry, but good friends just know things like that) ;)

Well, that shouldn't be a problem getting me adequately likkered up ;) (After all, I competed in the Miss Funky Butt contest when not even altered!)

Ah, well there will be some great skiing in Jackson I'm sure - say Hi to Wyoming for me (my cousin lives in Lander with his new baby, whom he and his wife just named Django Cash - is that the coolest name or what??) - and good luck on the hearing (I've got my own hearing on the 15th in Richmond - some nastiness resulting from my car accident last Nov.)! :(

It really gets you in the spirit though! It's not *that* bad (but it definitely does make it hard to work, as if it won't be hard enough at that time anyway) ;)

I remember last year when I wasn't getting to fest until Saturday morning....I put the cam on and there you all were, waving to me from Liuzza's....almost killed me lol! This year I'm not missing a day of fest. Can't stand the pain :)

The year of my divorce, when I didn't go to Fest - I just couldn't bear to listen to OZ or view the Liuzza's cam. I just hurt too much, and after that I vowed I would never miss a Jazzfest again.

I love Bourbon Street too! Everytime we go there we spend at least one night there if not two. It is part of the whole NoLA experience. I like sitting on the balcony for dinner and throwing dollar bills to the drunks. Pennies from Heaven. We did this in July with the Kids and it was too much fun. Probably spent 30.00 and it was the best entertainment of the night.

My favorite time in the quarter in early AM till about 4 PM just walking the streets, heaven on earth it is.

bourbon street, was lots of fun mardi gras 2007, we did waist a lot of time when there were other great places to check out in the city, now that I am older 35, I would like to hang at some more local places, we didnt even make it uptown last trip or frenchman street, but you gota love the crazy stuff you see on bourbon.

I have always been a huge fan of Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop down on the quiet side of Bourbon Street...its nice to unwind after a hot day at the fest, sitting around in the candle light, drinking ambers, and listening to the piano styling of Mr. Johnny Gordon...we musta held the piano stools down for at least 3 hours last year.

Then again, I also enjoy the busy end of Bourbon Street as well...very few places in the US where you can stand on the street with a tall cocktail and enjoy the people watching...

Is it april yet??? :)
