I've been seeing references to Crawfish Monica so often that it's on the top of my list. I LOVE the fried green tomatoes @ JF. My 1st JF this nice woman and her hubby shared them with my friend and I on our ride home from the fest. I'm addicted to those yummy tomatoes now!!:D

The cracklins and the Redfish Grill BBQ Oyster salad are on the top of my wish list for lost fest food.
According to a recent vote of folks (http://www.nojazzfest.com/chat/showthread.php?t=494)here, the top 2 choices were the Cochon de Lait po boy and the crawfish monica. But the Softshell Crab po boy fans were pretty vocal too.
Here's '05 & '06 food lists, in case anyone was wondering.....

I love the Bun (vermicelli) and the spring rolls from the food booths over by the lagniappe stage. It's filling but light enough to start the Fest day off without weighing me down for dancing. They weren't there last year. :( But I hope they are coming back this year.

No question. No variation. First Friday, before 11:15am, the trifecta of crawfish sacks, oyster pattie & crawfish beignets.
Later on, a Cuban sandwish & couchon de lait po boy.
I eat plenty of other stuff throughout the fest, but these are the only things I repeat multiple times.

I am with Jenn. The crawfish sack snack plate rules.
I took a virgin (of any sort of fest) with me last year, he tried to taste some of everything in a mindless food orgy. Needless to say, by the mid-afternoon he was passed out in a chair under the tree nearest the Fais Do Do. Pacing ones self is KEY!

Oh, the food.......
I am partial to the crawfish bread, cuban sammich, any of the jambalaya...but really, my strategy has always been to spot the shortest line and get in it. Whatever is at the other end is just fine with me.
Mr. Soul doesn't consider it a successful Fest unless he gets AT LEAST 2 bowls of the oyster & artichoke soup.

Basically, I love most all of it. But last year I decided to try a new dish. Cajun chicken and tasso with creale rice. It was incredibly good. I will definitely try something new each year. This year I will try the cochon de lait poboy. Can you believe that I have been coming for so many years and have never had one? I guess that I just tend to go for the usuals.

sheesh, I'm starving just reading this!
I love the fried chicken, crawfish enchiladas, the stuffed mushrooms, rosemint tea, and my daily dose of beignet (note to self, don't wear black to Fest).
Also, I'll agree with whoever mentioned the vermicelli - they're the same booth as the spring rolls, correct? They were indeed at Fest last year, but had moved back near Monica rather than near the Grandstands where they used to be. Nice to have something refreshing after fried this and saucy that. :-)

Every morning we walk in the gates... Phil heads to the cold, cold, beer and I to the crawfish bread... I proceed to slather it with hot sauce (crystal if you do not already know)... we find our group under da' "tree" and breakfast is served.
Other things my mouth is slobbering for... crawfish monica, the chiken, jama-jama, plaintain platter, fried green tomatoes, the fruit salad with the coconuts on top, po' boys of any kind... and that's just at the fest... outside those gates there's a whole other world of food I can't even get in too.
If we are talking things I would like to try... well, that be tough as I've eaten so many things there (I do love to eat) but (I'm ashamed to say it) have not had the strawberry lemonade yet... that's on my list this year, and the fried turkey po' boy (how'd I miss that one???).

Wow, I totally missed them last year and I was bumming. I guess I am so used to all the people in line for Monica that I didn't even think to look there. I will check by the grandstand again this year, but if they are not there, I will head straight over to Monica and look again. I really love that stuff.

okay, I LOVE the Stuffed Creole Bread - made by some women from Lafayette Louisiana - its very close to the crawfish monica line right near the Acura Stage - it looks kinda like a biscuit on the outside, but the inside is stuffed w/ spiced meat and sausage - we always get a bunch of them to munch on through out the day.....discovered them on the last day of teh Fest probably 8 years ago, we were heading out after the last act at about 7:20 and were hungry, the stuffed creole bread was the only thing that we could find, so grabbed a bunch of those.....then craved them till the next year... AND the women who sell them are awesome.....

I love that pheasant, andouille, quail gumbo if it's not too hot outside.
This question is like asking, "Who's better... van Gogh, Rembrandt or Michelangelo?" I'm down with the above, but my God, can you really go wrong?
I may be in the minority, but I would pay $40 just for the opportunity to sample the food at the Fest.

Zydekitten

Nope, KLC (and a hearty welcome by the way!) . . . they also serve:
- Sodas (Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Barqs Root Beer)
- Southern Comfort daiquiri drinks (over by their stage)
- Iced Teas of all kinds and flavors
- Cafe du Monde cafe au lait (either hot or iced)
- Cool Brew iced coffee
- Lemonade
- Bottled Water
That's all the other beverages I can think of . . . as I usually imbibe the COLD, COLD beer my own self :)

Nope, no overtly brought-in flasks may come through the gates . . . now that doesn't mean that folks don't figure out ways to get their favorite adult non-beer beverage in . . . if you know what I mean ;)
I believe some other folks on the Bored may have had personal experience with this - personally, drinking beer isn't a problem for me (it's how I made it through college). :D

While I am no longer allowed by the doctor to drink adult beverages, they can add some enjoyment. I suggest, however, that it is difficult to drink excessively and truly enjoy fest. It gets hot, it gets long; stamina adds to the enjoyment (heehee). I never drank much at fest when I was drinking (a few beers don't count as you burn them off). I saved my heavy drinking for night time.

Funny story; for hebjamn's 1st fest, he came down for 2nd weekend. I went to 1st weekend & was SOOOO excited and told him that the "cracklin people" were back after a long fest absence.
Bein as how his Boston self knew nothing about cracklins, when we sampled them he said "This is the cracklin people? I thought cracklin people were like 7th day adventists or something!" ;)

Unfortuantely, it's always been only beer at the fest. No wine or liquor. I never have understood that. It seems like the fest is losing a great opportunity to make money. Even if they want to stay away from liquor, they could at least have some wine drinks of some sort.
But, as mentioned above, there are lots of other drinks that can serve very well as mixers, if you discretely bring in something to spike them with.

The mango freeze spiked with Grey Goose Limon flavored Vodka is the absolute best. Kinda like a thick daiquiri. You can get the little "sample" bottles in usually.

okay, I LOVE the Stuffed Creole Bread - made by some women from Lafayette Louisiana - its very close to the crawfish monica line right near the Acura Stage - it looks kinda like a biscuit on the outside, but the inside is stuffed w/ spiced meat and sausage - we always get a bunch of them to munch on through out the day.....discovered them on the last day of teh Fest probably 8 years ago, we were heading out after the last act at about 7:20 and were hungry, the stuffed creole bread was the only thing that we could find, so grabbed a bunch of those.....then craved them till the next year... AND the women who sell them are awesome.....
That stuff saved my life one night -- I had gone straight from fest to a 7:00 show somewhere, then a 10:00 show somewhere else and was at Tips at 4ish and starving -- so between sets I go to the car to sit a spell and remembered the Creole stuffed bread. If you think it is good at the fest ...

As one of the money handlers at Ms. Lena's - I can tell you that the beverage prices broke down as follows:
Fosters - $4.00
Other Beers (MGD, Lite and Sharps) - $3.00
Sodas - $3.00
Bottled Water - $2.50
Hopefully, if the prices aren't going up - we can all practice memorizing the above and making change before our shifts this year at Ms. Lena's :)

I was watching a television show once about some doctors and nurses that were going to the Kentucky Derby. They took IV saline bags and emptied them out and replaced them with liquor (not sure how they cleaned the bags before adding the liquor). But then taped the bags to the stomach of one of the ladies. She looked pregnant and nobody questioned them going thru the gates. Not sure I would want to go to that much trouble, but it was funny.

They will look thru your chair bags and your backpacks. If you bring a purse, they may ask you to open it. But it is not usually a very hard or thorough search. These little bottles usually go unnoticed if you are creative is hiding them.
