They've actually been using the same song in a tire commercial up here in Canada for a while! They just have Fess whistling while these cars go up and down a snowboard pipeline, and and one point, the cars drive straight up the pipeline and stop...just as Fess stops whistling. It's awesome!

Okay, here's the link to the Canadian Goodyear commercial. (It isn't Big Chief, it is "Mardi Gras", but it still rocks!) Visit the link below and click on "Bobsled" under TV ads - it's worth it!

I wouldn't worry too much about it. From what I've seen, Fess's heirs (and those entrusted with overseeing his image, etc.) have a done a pretty good job about making sure that his name and image are used and rewarded properly. The man has become an almost iconic figure in NOLA, and it would be so easy to drag his likeness through the mud if there weren't people to look after it.
It seems to me that I recall reading about Fess's heirs having a bit of a pissing match with the Fest a few years back...perhaps something to do with the Acura Stage? Does this ring any bells with anyone?

Just as an aside, I've always believed that a big part of NOLA's rebuilding strategy should be for some organization to lobby North America's advertising agencies to consider hiring NOLA's talent when creating their ad campaigns. If they (who's they???) were to send out a complilation CD of Zydeco, piano roll (Marcia, Eddie Bo), funk, Injuns, Blues, etc. with the idea that the advertisers could have access to the music at a discounted royalty PROVIDED they tagged the ads with the name of the artist and a logo that indicated "Only in New Orleans" etc, the city's rich culture would be exposed to a much wider audience.
Just a thought!

I did some googling because I thought I heard one time that the whistling on 'Big Chief' was Earl King. He's credited with some whistling, but not on 'Crawfish Fiesta.'
Anyways, I found this article from 1977 which blew me away:
http://www.professorlonghair.com/archive/press/clippings/fafigaro1977pg1.html
Just some choice bits:
"It's a fine sight, these young cats like Johnny Zimple or Ed Volker, or Ivan Neville sitting at Fess' feet, lost in his music, learning and, like the dervish, becoming."
Fess had to go downtown to get special permits so a teenage Dr. John could play in barrooms.
There's so much more; a fascinating snippet from 30 years ago.
Damn, Paul, that was an awesome read! Didn't shine a very pretty light on Quint, hehe. Sure got the supplementals correct for the time period too. Thanks!

You're welcome! There's so much there, the 'Bald Head' story is great, Snooks and the snow falling, Zig's drumming, etc.
The Randy Newman appearance mentioned is of course the infamous Saturday Night Live during Mardi Gras, which I guess won't see the light of day, at least not while Lorne Michaels is still around. Also, Allison Kraslow is Allison Miner, for those keeping score at home.
