View Full Version : Arrive early, stay late?
First post. I've been lurking for a few months and finally decided to join the festivities. I've been to New Orleans a few times but never the Jazzfest. I have a couple of questions.
Do you generally get there at 11 and stay till closing?
Do you generally hang out at one stage the whole day, or roam around?
Do you make it a point to see the bigger names, or is it better to catch lesser known acts?

Blue, yes to the first question.....I hate missing a thing. For your first fest, I recommend picking at least 1 day that you don't "camp" out at a stage so you can roam freely. Maybe on a day that you don't HAVE to see the big name acts of the day. You have no idea what you're going to see. It took me 2 fests to make sure I got to all of the stages and that was last year. It was the BEST thing I ever did cuz man, I didn't know what I was missing. So cool!
I'd stick around here and talk about the style of music you like and then read, read, read....you'll get pointed in the right direction by this group. One thing I can say for sure (and I think I said it everyday at fest....NOTHING SUCKS!) You can't go wrong no matter what stage you're at, even if you think you'll hate the genre, I say try it first...good luck and welcome! :)

I would concur with my esteemed Threadhead colleague above, although I do have a bit of trouble getting my arse out of bed after being out the night before to be there when the gates open every Fest day . . . so I often get there after the first acts have gone on.
However, I too hate to miss anything - so I don't really "camp" at just one stage, but am a roaming kitten to check out all of the great things out there. Also, I usually have some friends who either are camped and save me a spot to rejoin them or you can just leave your chair in a spot and return to it when you want . . .
I found that it took about the first Fest or so to find out what process works best - and my guess is that it'll be the same for you too.
Welcome to Jazzfest, Blue!!! :D
Thanks for the replies. I have a feeling that the knowledge I gain from this forum will prepare me well.
I guess the advantage of arriving early and camping out a one stage is that you'd be close to the stage.
But roaming around would allow you to expand your horizons.

getting to a big stage early does not mean you will be closer when that last act you really want to see comes on. 10000 of your closest friends have the same idea, and will position themselves to reposition you in all liklihood. i always reccommend roaming the fest, and avoiding the big names without a major LA connection, in my horribly unfair opinion, those names attract folks without the jazzfest spirit of brotherhood in crowds. (nee phish, buffet, panic).
get close up to see marcia for the first time. maybe the rads if you can. beausoliel. dozens of others from NO and environs. if you are truly interested in camping out somewhere, make it the jazz or gospel tent, where you truly can stake out a small but workable space for the entire day (of course making friends with your row mates to hold the chair for you as you duck out for food/drink/restroom breaks).
if you can afford it, and like those big name acts, you cant go wrong with the big chief package. i did this last year and found it worth the money. will do it again this year for one weekend, but not two as i kinda enjoy the roam and revel.

the earlier the better - food lines are shorter, check out the shirts, discover an early band, browse the crafts...
We work there so we are there before the gates open but then at 10:45 / 11 am when the gates are open we get coffee and beignet so we are actually able to squeeze in a fest breakfast.
Most folks don't get there right at 11 - I'd say the over/under median time is about 1-2pm - but the others are right that the early hours are kind of special. Less crowded, no lines, can get close to any stage. I usually roll in around noon.
If it's your first fest, unless you're with a big group, I suggest roaming every day. Don't set up camp, don't stay in any one place for longer than one set. Just follow the cubes, follow your ears, follow your nose and stomach, wherever it may all take you.

NO SQUATING!!!!! Always roam around and follow the spirit that takes you where you're gonna be...camping is for the mildly entertained....NO SQUATING!!!!
Blue, many of us like to stop at Liuzza's bar for an eye-opener before the gates open. They make a fine bloody mary, and are just a couple blocks from the Sauvage St. gate.

amen brother Swag....took me awhile to get it through my head but thank god I finally did. It was AWESOME roaming last year. Actually, I think it was you who rode my ass to check out ALL the stages...got me off my perch at the bigger stages and I owe you one for that :)
Blue, careful of setting up at the big stage in the morning...that crowd swells incredibly throughout the day. If you're gonna set up....do it on the side where the dirt track is so you can get to the potties. It's HELL trying to make your way to the back to get to the other ones, especially when the crowd is at full capacity. Could take you up to an hour to make it there and back when the lines are long. Easy in/easy out is key and look for the flags near your chairs or it's a nightmare trying to find them again in the crowd. You'll learn everything you need to know on this bored and please remember, there are NO STUPID QUESTIONS! Please ask what ya wanna okay? That's what I did for my first fest and the info on here proved to be priceless :)

We get there early and stay untill the last act. I love to roam and take in acts I haven't seen before. The economy and Jazz tents are great so is the Blues tent.I guess it's all great. I even enjoy standing in line at the food booths you can meet alot of nice peolpe and get a look (and sometimes a taste) of all the different foods.

I usually try to get to fest by noon most days, but before 11:00 on opening day and stay to the end. Man, there's nothing like walking back onto the pristine, revered holy ground on opening day! In general, the "lesser known" acts play the earliest slots and the biggest names the closing slots. I also try to get lunch soon after arriving before the lines are too long and then try to eat again mid-to late afternoon and again before I leave (sometimes to go). I actually have to write in "EAT!" in the margins of my cubes so I don't forget as I have done in the past. There's a lovely tradition there where total strangers offer each other tastes of their food when they see or hear you wondering what they're eating. The first time someone offered me a taste, I was totally startled, but accepted happily. Now I do the same - oftentimes I'm too full or hyper to finish my food and I always try to give it away rather than throw it away. Do read the artist bios that come out on this site - I've gone to see many acts I wouldn't have otherwise after reading those. My nickname might be Zydeco Bonnie, but there's a whole lot of other music that blows me away. When there are big name acts at the big stages at either end of the fairgrounds, the other stages/tents are nowhere near empty, but nowhere as crowded as those. I almost never go to the big stages any more, unless there's a particular act I have to see, and then I take off afterwards. I hardly ever go see the big name acts -- I'M IN LOUISIANA, DUDE, and wanna hear artists I'd rarely if ever get a chance to see elsewhere. Regardless, just about every artist plays their best at the fest. Do read swag's site for great tips on what to bring, how to get around with the least hassle, etc., etc. You are gonna have so much fun! :D Don't forget to come back on and post your experiences.

I'm one of those types that "camps out" - I get to the Fest probably at about 9:30 with bloody marys and then sit in my folding chair in line waiting for the gates to open (last year while doing this i heard Paul Simon doing his practice set) - then when the gates open i set up at the Acura stage, i've been in the same spot for years and have adopted many people who meet me there - usually friends start arriving around noon and if i feel like wandering around i can....depends on my mood, sometimes i stay at the compound the whole day, other times i leave and roam around awhile....also, we always have ALOT Of space at "the compound" and we ALWAYS adopt people during the day so when the big name comes on we have a full crowd.....this works for me, but the fest is all about finding out what works for you.....
Oh, this year i'll have a flag flying which i will post sooner the Fest, people are always welcome to stop by the compound :D

nope, nothing is relatively empty, no matter who is playing...that's because there are so many people who love so many different genres of music. Some people never go near the big stages and some people never leave the big stages.

If I had to choose between first thing and last minute, I'd choose 11AM -- that is when the fest is least crowded and more of the local acts play. I relish that opportunity to discover new bands I was turned on to: Galactic, 007, Royal Fingerbowl, Morning 40 Federation, Afroskull, Bingo, Feufolet, and many others that way.
That being said, I'm in at 11 and out after the last note has been played. And I roam -- stopping either to graze at a stage for a song or two or commit for a full set.
One tip I'd offer, is when you travel by the big stages (especially at the end of the day), use the race track -- it is longer, but saves tons of time.

I like to set up camp if there are several bands I want to hear at one stage. Usually, for me that's either the stage that was known as the SoCo stage last year or the jazz and heritage stage where the injuns and brass bands usually play. But this year, more folks will be attracted to the old soco/sprint/heritage stage(who knows what it will be called this year) because of the way they are going to set up each day. There will be more bigger name acts at that stage this year. I never camp at acura, actually hardly ever go there because i just can't take the crowds. I do love roaming too. Many days I'll roam thru the stages for the last set of the day.

I've always been a roamer, though I've been fortunate enough to have friends that set up camp. It's always nice to have a place to stash things and even have a seat for awhile. However, I've also been trapped at a camp a few times when the crowd swells to enormous porportions. Not always a bad thing until you need a bathroom break, or need to make a beer/food run! :-)
The best thing to do is look at your cubes, decide which performances you want to see and follow the music. Some of my best JF moments have been stumbling across a band or performer I've never heard of while going to another stage.

I have it down to a science. I check the cubes and highlight who I plan to see. If most of them are at one stage, I camp and then roam a bit. If they are at a bunch of different stages, I roam most of the time. Of course, sometimes, I start out camping and then change to roaming and some days I start out roaming and end up camped somewhere. At the end of the day, I check my cubes to see if I actually saw anyone I had highlighted at the beginning or if I saw someone else wonderful instead.
Like I said, it's an exact science. ;)
You all are great. Thanks for the feedback.

do people usually complain when you lay down the tarp/blanket or is that a generally accepted practice?
I know at Red Rocks shows for instance people lay tarps down to save room for buddies and it causes quite the problem for their GA shows.
I'm a classic rock kinda guy. I haven't yet come up with a definitive list of who to see yet, but would love to hear some good blues guitar work. I liked the Allman Brothers back in the day, but not sure what to expect of them now. I would have loved to have seen Springsteen last year.

Red Rocks has to be one of the best venues in the world!!! Well, to answer your question, if we have extra space on the tarp then we invite other people in. Most of the (early early) people know each other either by name or face. Must be a core group of 100 plus people. Our Krewe is about 12-15 people who do everyday. Just be sure to use up all of your space on the tarp or do what we do. Great way to meet new people.

Most folks don't complain unless you're taking up a huge space for like 2 people. Also, don't complain if folks step on your "space", or if it's really crowded, cut across it. And please, please, don't rope your chairs together and create a "fenced in" compound. That really irks people.

Blue, Im a diehard ABB fan since the early 70s. First saw them in 72. I must say, the current lineup does not get any better. Now for guitar slingers, if you never seen Sonny Landreth he is a must. The master of the slide. You need to see him during JF up front at a small venue. Lucky Peterson is another slinger you might want to add to your list.

I second that - i remember about four years back some fools at the Acura stage started roping their areas off: (1) it was VERY UNJAZZFEST LIKE, not good behaviour, and simply BAD MANNERS; and (2) it created HORRIBLE foot traffic b/c you'd get halfway through the crowd and then couldn't get any further b/c you hit the rope.....i'm not sure how the fest put a stop to it, but since then i haven't seen the rope - :D IT IS ONLY GOOD MANNERS TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO WALK THROUGH YOUR AREA (well, sometimes we make them dance through ;) ) AND TO FILL UP YOUR SPACE WITH PEOPLE WHEN ITS A BIG NAME ACT AND CROWDED:D

I almost like them more now than in the early 90's with Dickey B. I of course am a bit to young to have seen them in the late 60's and 70's. The Fillmore East show is the king of the hill as far as live performances go. The BIll Graham Presents book has a great bit on those shows (good book!)

To each their own.
We line up early, RUN in, and get as close to the stage du jour (usually Acura but sometimes Sprint) and throw down our tarp and put up our chairs and flags. Just enough space for our krewe to be comfortable, it is very true that you can't hog a lot of space for a few people.
Many threadheads have been happy we have the locations we have when they come join us up front for an act they really want to see. We take turns wandering and get to see pretty much everything we want to see too (FOMS permitting).

So when there's a huge name playing, say like Springsteen last year, are the rest of the stages relatively empty?
The only time a stage would be relatively emtpy would be for the first act. Although i've been to a couple of stages during the day where it was surprisngly not as crowded as I would have assumed. So it is a good idea to roam around.
I would also recommend the interview stage at some point during the weekend. You will hear some great stories along with music sometimes. And it a nice place to rest up and catch your breath. It's located in the grandstand.

By the way, I can't recall if anyone has mentioned in this thread the benefits of sitting oneself down for a 1/2 hour in the air conditioned grandstand for one of the food demonstrations? If you can stay in your chair long enough, you'll get a taste of whatever was made.

Going to the Rock n Bowl to see him during 1st weekend. I love a man that slides YooHOO

Z: I just do not see any chairs tied together anymore. We are in what I call the DMZ everyday. It is very rare that we run into a "fence". But when I do, I try to find the female in the group and deal with her or have a female leading the way. If a chair needs to be folded, I always explain what Im doing before I grab their chair. When everything else fails, just ask if they need you to pick up any beer/food for them on the way back.

Hey Corona how was Bobby Lounge? I have heard 10ft Woman on WWOZ and love it. Would like to try and catch him durring the fest.
I know you didn't ask me, but it was one of my favorite sets last year. I suggest you find an article to read about him first. He has lived a unique life and that made his music more interesting to me.

hell yeah!!! Mango daquiri's with the rum floater too!!
Now that is how I spell BreakFEST! Gotta get to Liuzza's this year...actually didn't make it there last year  strolled the 1/4 in the early AM then caught the fest bus in through the gates.
I agree with the esteemed Swag...early morning at the FG is coolio, small crowds(is that an oxymoron?), cool vibe-Sunday @ the Gospel tent...man I want it to be April 27th now!
also roam until your hearts content...catch a set here then grab a bite and a beer or h2o or mango freeze...then a set there...then go take in a food demo...then go to the contemporary crafts area and give RT some bidness...then to another set...man I am killing myself heah!

In recent years, I always try to sit in the periphery, no matter what stage I go to. I like having a good view, but I hate getting trapped within a huge group of people. I'm not very graceful (clumsy as hell) and I always end up stepping on something or someone when I try to extridite myself. I don't get slurged at the Fairgrounds, but even a mild beer buzz can make me even more leadfooted and confused. Also, if you're a newbie, you'd be surprised how hard it can be to find your previous spot, once you squirm your way out to go to the blue room or beer tent. (Always make a mental note of a flag that is closeby!) And being close to the track makes it easy to switch to a different stage, especially on those days when it is REALLY crowded.
Saying that, once in awhile there will still be a circumstance when I show up early, get up close and camp. This year's Steely Dan/Harry Connick Jr. show may be an example of that. But on those days, I don't consume much liquid (to avoid having to pee) and plan to staying put in that spot all day long.

Two comments, BD: (1) Please don't extradite yourself, we'd like you to stay here in the U.S. I believe you meant "extricate" yourself. (2) To make note of your surroundings, best to make note of another landmark besides "a flag near you;" some of those darned flag bearers actually move around (and then you're screwed trying to get back to find your friends)!

I usually wander Friday & Saturday and camp somewhere on Sunday. By then it seems I've had it with the crowds and keeping up with where everyone else is and have given up on FOMS (or I'm just ready to accept it at that point). Usually the Acura periphery - somewhere with easy access to blue rooms & beer stand - seems just perfect for an all-day-let's-chill-just-happy-to-be-here-spot on Sunday. This year, since Festy seems to have indicated it'll be Steely Dan then Harry Connick Jr closing it out, bet we'll do the same.

I have gone to the Jazz Fest since I was about 12 years old and I'll be 45 in August. Believe me when I tell you, first-timers, camping at one stage is a mistake. There are far too many good thing you'll miss out on if you do. Sure, the Jazz Fest involves making some hard musical choices. But when you think about, choosing between the exquisite pleasure of two (or three)simultaneous acts isn't that bad a dilemma to face, now is it?
I think staying at one stage all day would be sheer torture, though. You'd have to literally tie me down, and even then I think I would manage to chew through the ropes to get out and about!
Sorry campers, but I got call 'em as I see 'em.
Oh, yeah you should arrive at 11:00, if you can manage it, and stay till the sun is beautifully setting!

Camping is just that. Always wondering what is across the fairgrounds. It is nice to have a home base for meeting and finding friends. I have set up camp and spent less than 1 hr of the day there some days and more time other days. Follow your ears was great advice...The measure of a great fest is not by who/what you see but by who or what you don't miss out on. You can't do it all so do what you can well!!! With so many great options it is hard to make a bad decision.
I can't wait till the gates open...

This will be my second fest.
I am very psyched!!
Do y'all have a meet-up time/place ? -- I would like to meet some if not all y'all while I am cruising the cubes.
I am sad that I found this site somewhat too late to be part of the patry.
*sigh*
Maybe next year. (which is something that Cleveland sports fans say every world series and super bowl)

I don't bring a chair. I bring a towel to sit on when I need to sit. I usually roam throughout the days because I might miss something if I don't. There are always at least 2 things that I want to see going on at the same time.
I usually just catch a song or 2 by the BNAs so that when my friends ask how they are, I can say "OK" and not be lying. :D

Definitely roam and catch as much food variety and music variety as you can!
Some of my favorite moments have been in the Gospel tent or Fais Do Do just wandering on by and stopping for a few. Now they are a part of the ritual.
It all starts with a nice smoke at Congo around 11 AM and ends with a cold iced tea and some monica around 7:15!
Make the most of every day- there is nothing better!

Ok, here's our routine....we get to the fest around noon and set up our flag and chairs and blankets somewhere near the main stage. Then, we roam around. I have a schedule all figured out but I never get to follow it since I Am ALWAYS sucked into some great band that I had never previously heard but now can't getaway from. It's the BEST. You will find new favorite bands all weekend long. It's good to have a "base" because then you can keep going back and meeting up with your friends and regrouping. The flag helps because it gets so crowded and it's hard to find your spot. We tend to leave at 6, go back to the hotel and sleep from maybe 7-10 then go back out to see some night shows. We are frequently out till the wee hours (if not dawn), and then get up by 11 and head to the fairgrounds. I am always exhausted for a week when we get back from Jazzfest. It's my favorite weekend of the year.

Here's a quesiton from a first-timer:
To roam or camp is a good question. I'm thinking of roaming the first day (5/4) for sure, maybe the second day too and then probably camping at Accura on Sunday.
The question is....if we set up a little three-person camp...how do people feel if we leave and do a little roaming from time-to-time and leave the camp all together? Or should at least one person always hang to prevent squaters or general annoyance that we're taking up space and not using it at that time.
Maybe it's a silly question, but I want do whatever I can to maintain a fest-spirt and have a great time.
Thanks

I would suggest bringing back a cold cold beer in payment for neighbors watching your chairs for you while you wander. And I wouldn't suggest wandering and leaving things unattended in the 1/2 hour or so before the headliner comes on stage at The Acura or Gentilly stages.

ThanksNo silly questions, that's what this board is for. Always good to make friends first with your neighbors all around you. If they have flags, make note of them, cause it may be hard to find the spot again (then again, they and their flag may have moved, so get additional frames of reference, eg., position relative to the sound board, a Jumbotron, etc.) Then when you leave for a bit, they'll expect you back and you'll know where you're going. (Did that make any sense?) I don't think you need to leave one person there guarding the fort so to speak if the three of you would rather be roaming together. Do take your valuables with you.
By all means, roam, especially on your first-ever fest day.
No worries leaving camp unattended. Don't leave valuables there (purse, camera), but the chairs or blanket will be fine. Unlikely anyone will squat, but if they do, so what?
It's okay to leave space unused for a while; just don't set up camp at noon and not return till 5pm.
sunnyla

Thanks all...that all makes perfect sense. I'm always one to chat with the neighbors and make new friends. I figured that leaving and coming back is cool too, but just wanted to make sure.
We haven't decided if we're bringing chair yet or just sitting on our butts. We'll see.
Thanks everyone for all the good info.

We are nesters. We set up camp near the beer booth at the Acura stage and then go roaming. We've found that if you walk the track instead of crossing the fest, you get where you're going a lot quicker.

I go every other year and I love the Fest! What I like best is every year I discover 2-3 acts that I have never heard about prior and they blow me away! We have a flag so we typically set up a "base camp" somewhere. Usually it is in the Acura stage. However, we all roam around and usually only couple from our group stay near one place for the day. It is hard to beat starting out the morning at the Gospel stage (especially on Sunday).
The best thing about JF is you will end up doing what you like best. It will probably be a combination of what people suggest here. Enjoy the FEST!
