I'll have to pick The Packers.
Right now, I'd have to say the answer is the same as my favorite pro sports team: the Mets. They are so bad that I want to blow them up and start all over again.

Hey NOLA, I'm taking my girls to see the Mets play the 'Stros for the final series of the season (a/k/a "The Race to the Bottom"). They've been asking me to take them to the new stadium and a friend just offered me some free tickets, so the price is right. Want me to pick you up any souvenirs?
I understand regional rivalry well enough, but can't figure out why all the locals hate the Falcons. 40+ years and not even 1 back to back winning season shouldn't be enough to inspire fear and loathing. BTW, I love the Saints. The game on Nov.2 should be a humdinger.

I must admit it is harder to hate the Mets in their current sorry state. Of course it also harder for me to love the Astros in THEIR sorry condition. At least we fired Cooper yesterday. There just isn't any excuse for going from one game back at July 22 to 16.5 games back 2 months later.
All I have to do to rekindle my intense dislike of the Mets is to think back to the '86 NLCS....
I think I'll pass on the souvenir offer, but thanks. :p

sometimes our pitcher bats 8th. Tony is a mad man/genius/vegatarian.
sometimes pitchers get the game winning rbi.
there have been many great hitting pitchers over the last century.
the strategy of when to bat for a pitcher gives another dimension to the game. or we could turn it into football and play a different offensive & defensive team.

AL managers don't have to do much of anything... never have to decide whether to hit for a pitcher, have a pitcher bunt, etc... all players should have to participate in the offense and defense. Ditto for football. these divided squads are lame. I though football players were supposed to be tough.
So is having a player consistently batting ninth that forgot how to bat.
I can remember a particularly pitiful Braves squad in the 70's who's leading hitter was Phil Niekro. Knucksie was hitting around .229 which was good enough to lead the team for about two weeks. I sure don't miss that team.

Et tu, Nola...you NL sentimentilists crack me up.
A) the AL used to have pitchers bat and there WERE some good pitchers that could hit back then for both leagues...Bob Gibson comes to mind. Of course there are some good hitting pitchers and every once in a while some of them get a game winning rbi-law of averages says that. The argument of when to pinch-hit can be made for just about any position as the mastery of both the offense and defense is something that not all utility players master well.
B) Interleague play just takes the guessing out of what we will see in the WS. The dynamic to the world series was two teams that never saw each other, so I suppose that may diminish the game from a viewing perspective.
C) Frankly, Frank, I am all for the abolishment of all-star games period. It interrupts seasons, it has minimal entertainment value, and it leads to a possibility of injury for a major player on a team.

Leave the damn All-star game alone. Back before 32 teams from each league made the playoffs, I mean, back when winning the regular season actually meant something, the All Star game was the second biggest day in sports. We've had about a ten year blip where some people lost a sense of that tradition, but putting home field advantage at risk has made the game matter again. And one of the best reasons to like the All-star game is because the squawking jocksniffing sport media hates it. They get confused between Football (Pro-bowl has always sucked) and Baseball (some of the greatest moments have come during this game).
Don't get me going....This idea that the team with the eighth best record in baseball can still win the World Series is ridiculous. Why even play the season?

I love the fact that the all-star game has determined home field-especially in '04 and '07. It was done so due to the decision by Selig to end a game that was tied the year before (Or should I say the night before as that is when the decision was conceived). The season is played to get one of those spots. If your theory is used then March Madness is useless as well, going from 8 teams to 64.

Now that you mention it, ever since they let more than one team from a conference into the tournament, it hasn't quite been the same.
Perhaps next year the entire ACC could lose in the first round...now that I would take the day off to watch. Especially those traitorous Eagles.

Oh I think you can do all that without assaulting policemen, throwing chairs across the court, occasionally grabbing a player by the throat (and lying that it didn't take place), and basically trying to humiliate anyone who disagrees with your bullying tactics. And then there was, of course, this memorable quote "I think that if rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it." Some role model that guy is. Whiners about what????? And the media sucking up to the Sawks??? Take the PED list for example, two Red Sox players on the list and suddenly the list is newsworthy again. There are 100 guys on the list but they leak Manny and Papi, coincidence? I think not...it sold a lot of newspapers and garnered a lot of hits. Why? Because the Sox have the largest average fan bases in other cities. The curse was a media enhanced deal as well. So sell media sucking up to some other fan base. I want to know what the media (and the anti-Sawks brigade) will say when we win our third world series since '04 without Manny and with production from a "clean" Big Papi. Oh sorry am I whining?

Aw, Barb, you're not still sore about '04...?;)
Most everyone was happy to see the Sox win in '04 after an 86 year drought. Did the Sox payout big $ to assemble the cast of characters to make it happen? Perhaps, but someone had to give the Yankmees a run for their money...literally. Sox fans do seem to be everywhere, but I guarantee none of those fans were buying tickets and hats when they sucked for all those years...
It doesn't matter what team it is, when someone is on top for a while, people want to see them fall and see someone else there. Remember how everyone thought it was great when an underdog team named the "Patriots" won the SB in '01, the year we suffered the tragedy of 9/11?

Division III is looked at with rose colored glasses. I played D3 basketball and the coach likely didn't know the library existed. The starters were his pet kids who had the HS stats although they weren't that good anymore. They were arrogant as Hell though and would walk in drunk at 3AM the night befor a game. Hence the 3-23 record my senior year. All of the best players had left the program by then.
On the note of the list of "trangressions". No doubt some went overboard but some of those listed are just plain silly. If he was so out of line calling out Ted Valentine, then why was Ted Valentine fired shortly after by the Big Ten? Most of those incidences you will find by far more jolly and liked coached. Rick Majerus anyone. Nobody has compiled a Rick Majerus but I have seen him do the same things. Yet, he's a good guy of the sport. Oh, and he's my other favorite coach. Plus, if you ever read the account of the incident with the Puerto Rican cop, you'll see who saved Coach K's ass in that situation.

As a lifelong fan (and I know I'm not alone on this), I was annoyed by the explosion of the "pink hats"; the new fanbase the emerged during the '04 season, but grew exponentially when they won the World Series that year. Most find them rather obnoxious in that they wear all their gear (hats, shirts, flip-flops, thong...sorry Dan if you're wearing your thong right now) wherever they go, and are probably too vocal for most folk's liking. I can't say their success has destroyed the hometown fanbase, but I for one wouldn't mind a few losing seasons to weed out some of these blowhards and give me a chance to get a reasonably priced Sox/Yanks ticket.

Right now, Dallas Cowboys are the enemy.
Pretty much anti-Lakers in hoops, although this is fairly new. As a native Noo Yawka, I'm traditionally against Bahston teams. I guess I'm mellowing with age; tho I rooted against the Red Sawx, I was actually happy to see them win after all those years (not against Rockies tho, only the first time.)
Likewise the Celtics. Life time Celtic hater from the Chamberlain/ Russell era, I disliked Koby & wanted veterans such as Pierce , Garnett & Allen to finally win, so I actually rooted for Celts against Lakers.
I'm down on Bobby Knight too, takes all the fun out of the game, but have to respect his coaching. Plus, amazingly good as a commentator.
I prefer college hoops, but the NBA players are so damn good, if you love hoops, gotta love the NBA

Not this one - I reject the mostly male assumption that ALL females like and want to be swathed in bubble gum (or even worse - Barbie) pink!!!
I'm a regular fan, just like the ones with a Y chromosome, and want to wear gear in the regular colors.
Alyssa Milano is one of the main culprit of the "feminine" colors coming into the game, her and MLB Marketing departments. Just for the record, I know a lot of female fans that wear the pink Pats and Sawks hats. Ain't the color of the hat in my opinion, it is the passion for the game. Most of my friends of the opposite gender are very articulate about the teams, more than I can say for a lot of my male cohorts.
Also the Florida Marlins.
What an incredible month this has been for Braves fans. I thought the Labor Day weekend nosedive was all she wrote for the boys. To play a meaningful ballgame on the last day of September was pretty special. And it was kind of them to bow out the night before hockey season started.

Okay, please add the Miami Dolphins to my list.
I'll add the f***** Jets and the worst defense in the history of the NFL. Gee, everyone, were running Jones up the middle on the next play. Miami basically gave away their plays and the Jets couldn't figure it out. That final touchdown cost me my week in Fantasy football. 3rd and 2 and the snap to Jones. What were the Jets thinking, he was going to throw a fade?

It's still the Yankees for me, but only because I care about and follow MLB much more than the Narcissistic Boys Association. Especially now that the Yanks are about to add Cliff Lee, as expected.

The Heat move doesnt bother me ... the players are taking less than what they would elsewhere to make it happen within the rules of the game. Now as for the Yankees, there are no rules (no cap) and thats disturbing to me. The Steelers are at the top of my list followed by Yankees, Red Sox, then USC (dont tell me theyre not a pro team)

the baseball union remaining strong hasn't exactly been good for the game.
Everyone blames Selig for drug testing not coming into the game for so long but that's crap. The union wouldn't have allowed it and he knew it until the shit hit the fan 7-8 years ago with the steroid mess.
The the NFL is a better product because of the cap. I'd love to hear the argument against that.

In terms salary alone, I don't think any of the three are leaving much on the table by making this move. Part of Riley's presentation included having the Florida income tax implications explained so that they realize the extent to which they get to keep more of what they make by being Florida residents. That is a fact. I know plenty of Connecticut people who changed their residences to Florida for precisely that reason once we instituted a state income tax here. As for the extra year Cleveland could have offered him--well, that was for an extra year. Now he is signing for five instead of six, and he'll be able to sell that sixth year (and beyond) for whatever the market will bear at that time. So, in terms of annual income, I really don't think any of the three of them is taking much of a realized hit, if any. Yes, there is something to be said for the guarantee of income for that sixth year in the event that he is injured, etc.; but barring something career-ending (or a major restructuring when the current collective bargaining agreement expires) he'll most likely make out just fine on that sixth year too. And obviously, he'll be just fine financially irrespective.
I don't like this move because I believe they all lied. This was planned years ago and if owners colluded like this it would be illegal. The players put their teams and the public through a charade to create the illusion of a choice that was already made long ago. It was obvious to anyone watching the playoffs that LeBron quit on his team. He checked out. That's not cool imo.
He also blew any shot he had of being considered one of the greats like MJ. But he decided he wanted to join Wade's team, in Wade's city, and to have fun with his friends in South Beach. Great for them. The rest of the world that wasn't already NBA groupies couldn't care less, except to root for them to fail.

excellent points... I didnt know that about the difference in taxes in FLA. Wouldnt Lebron have been able to bend Cleveland over for whatever amount he wanted though? The Collusion aspect is interesting. When the Pats had their run in the NFL, guys were restructuring contracts to keep the core together, is this any different?

Miami Heat, and I'm not a big basketball fan. But it just ties into my newfound hatred of LeBron James. But I can console myself in the fact that he will bring to the Heat and Miami his tradition of disappearing in the playoffs for years to come.
because he went to a team with talent (even though some would say after the big 3, they have nothing)?
If he had gone to the Clippers, it would have been okay?
Joining two other stars--one of whom is arguably the second or third best player in the league and the other of whom is probably top ten--is a cop out imo. Although MJ, Bird and Magic all had help, as did Kobe, I don't think you'd ever see them make a move like this. It's as if Bird and Magic decided to join the same team instead of going against each other. It's not competitive. It's not going to be fun to watch if they are essentially the South Beach Globetrotters.
Wade already has a championship without LeBron. The fact that LeBron felt that he needed that much help to win a championship himself imo diminishes/dilutes any legacy he thought he might achieve as the greatest player ever. He's going to have a tough time even topping Kobe as the best player in the league.
I think the was the worst choice for the NBA and the worst choice for LeBron if he was concerned about his "brand" and his legacy. But yeah, it'll be fun and a lot easier for him playing in South Beach with two other all-stars and friends. That was his choice, but I don't like it. I'm sure he's crushed...

Let's see, orchestrated an hour long waste of time that rivaled Geraldo Rivera's Al Capone's Vault special. Strung along his city and his team, wants to market himself as a player equal to MJ or any of the greats when in reality so far he couldn't carry their shoes and this move emphasises that. If he's "The King", stay with Cleveland and MAKE them a winner, or go to another team and MAKE them a winner, don't latch onto a team and a player that has already won. Or if you do, just cut the bs and low key it.
He's Basketballs A-Rod, and even A-Rod has learned to "blend" as much as he can. He's won his championship, but do you think he garners the same respect as some other players?

Spare me. The Yankees are able to boast all of that because they don't have to deplete their farm to make all the other moves when they consistently pay the top salaries to the most players and outspend every other team by a factor that is so significant that it consistently gives them a major competitive edge over every other team, even the Red Sox and Mets who are the next biggest spenders. The only people on the planet who don't see this are Yankee fans, and even most of them admit it, adding "it's not my money."
The rules allow it, and as we've seen it doesn't always guarantee championships, but there's a reason why everyone on the planet uses the Yankees as the only example of the team that "buys" its championships. It's because they do. It is cool that they are able to boast so many of their own homegrown players, but it is only because of their vast financial edge deployed for other moves--as well as to keep those players-- that they are able to do so.
If he was concerned about his "brand" or legacy, he would have gone to the Knicks. He could have rescued a once proud franchise and been a billionaire when the floodgates of endorsements were opened.

I don't see anything wrong with the ESPN special. It's pro sports. It's entertainment. It's what pro athletes do now. He didn't owe Cleveland one thing. He was free to go where he wanted. If that's where he wanted to go, fine by me. Why shouldn't he make as much money as he can?

Wait a minute. He's not basketball's A-Rod. ARod is complete douchebag. What has Lebron done that rivals anything ARod has done? ARod took steroids and then lied about it to everyone. Lebron has done nothing that touches that.
But to your last point, I agree. I don't think ARod has gotten as much respect in NY than if he had stayed in Seattle for instance and won it but if he had done that, he would have made less money and probably would not have won anything, like Lebron in Cleveland.
All Lebron has done is market himself and take an opportunity that was in front of him. Don't compare that to ARod, please.

The Yankees spent years depleting the Farm for those big contracts under the direction of King George. It was stupid and didn't win a WS. Now that the team is under Hal the Younger, the farm has been replenished. Money doesn't replenish your farm - good scouting/smart signings do.
Minaya was stupid enough to go down the same path .... deplete the farm for big names. It doesn't work. The Mets will have to come to that conclusion some time after they have new ownership/management. The Mets are pretty screwed up in that area - would you want to sign up for that?
The Red Sox are somewhere in between. The fact that they are still in the race with all of their injuries is a testament to their Farm. Epstein knows what he's doing, just need ownership on his side.

I agree with that 100% too but those teams really don't impact the game in the same way (obviously).
With the current NYY rotation, if they don't win the WS it will be a complete failure. The fact they've only one it once in the last 7-8 years is unreal with that kind of payroll disparity they have with the rest of the league.

If you your team salary is less than the profit sharing money you receive, the left over amount should go to the teams who want to spend and become better.
I think the Mariners are stupid for the Lee move. They have a good team. Sure they are way behind, but it's just All Star Break .... Texas will swoon in the heat, the Angels are really beat up, and Oakland, well they're Oakland.
It is cool that they are able to boast so many of their own homegrown players, but it is only because of their vast financial edge deployed for other moves--as well as to keep those players-- that they are able to do so.
yup,..the yankees take in the most money,.. and then they turn around and spend the most money...
all agents and players know they can get at least a 20% add on when the yankees get involved... the yankees home grown guys don't play for a discount,..if anything they extort more money from the yankees because they know the team has it,..and they know they want to protect their brand....
then they have the exact opposite of the no state income tax thing as players demand and receive a premium to play in new york,.. in the major league section of town that is....
great article here on last nights circus act......
--------------------------------------------------------
Author and LeBronologist Buzz Bissinger described it as TV's equivalent of waterboarding. New York Post columnist Mike Vaccaro called it an "awful night for Cleveland, worse night for sports, worst night for ESPN."
Eric Stangel, the head writer and executive producer for The Late Show with David Letterman, delivered an equally scathing review on Twitter: "I'm keeping my 2 yr old up to watch the LeBron James Special. I want her to see the exact moment our society hit rock bottom."
The decision on "The Decision" finally came at 9:27 p.m., following the kind of milking best done on a farm. Watching the LeBron James reality show on Thursday night, I gained a new respect for TV's Amish in the City and Temptation Island. This was not a good night for sports television, even if the ratings turn out to be big.
ESPN executives had said repeatedly on Wednesday that James would announce his decision in the first 10 to 15 minutes of the show. Not so. The show opened with Stuart Scott, Michael Wilbon, Chris Broussard, and Jon Barry chatting around a table for 10 minutes about the magnitude of the moment, before Scott read something off a teleprompter that cited James' greatness. That was followed by a feature in which viewers were told how LeBron had dazzled and amazed us and that he was the most coveted prize in this year's free-agent class. The Bristol crew finally tossed it over to freelance interviewer Jim Gray in Greenwich, Conn. ... 22 minutes into the show.
Then, in a decision that defied logic, reason, drama and journalism, Gray asked 16 questions over six minutes before getting to the question that needed to be asked. He asked James if he was still a nail-biter, if he wanted to sleep on his decision, and he even repeated a question ("What did you expect from/what have you thought about this process?") before finally asking the following: "The answer to the question everyone wants to know: LeBron, what is your decision?" The inane and extended foreplay was excruciating and tortured, and the veteran journalist was destroyed on social media, some famous voices among the critics. Tweeted Keith Olbermann: "Jim Gray, my pal, I am about to retroactively take Pete Rose's side." Offered ESPY host Seth Meyers: "Foreplay from Jim Gray just as satisfying as I've always imagined it would be."
If Gray had a highlight, it was his asking James about going to Dwyane Wade's team and not being the headliner. "For me, it's not about sharing," James said. "It's about everybody having their own spotlight and doing what's best for the team." He later asked how James could explain this to Cleveland and what the major reason was for leaving the Cavaliers, and got James to give up the news that Erik Spoelstra will remain the Miami Heat coach (at least for now). As James answered Gray's questions, I'm sure I wasn't alone in thinking this: Any chance we could get a shot of the crowd's reaction in Miami or Cleveland?
The most compelling moment of the program came at 9:52 p.m., when producers hustled to get footage of James' No. 23 jersey burning on the ground in Cleveland. Wilbon -- he and Barry both performed above this circus on the night -- asked the player how he felt about the image. Said a clearly nervous James: "I can't get involved. .... This is a business. I had seven great years in Cleveland. I hope the fans understand, and maybe they won't."
Late on Thursday night, ESPN executive vice president Norby Williamson, who had told reporters the announcement would come early in the show, responded to the late reveal. "Our plan was to go to the announcement within the first 15 minutes," said Williamson. "It turned out the LeBron interview began 22 minutes into the live show. The larger point I was trying to make is that the news would be presented within the first part of the program, to allow for analysis and perspective on the front and back end of the announcement. I think we accomplished that despite the fact that my prediction was a little off."

This thread is making my fri workday go by much better. Thank you!
Yankee fans will be the first to tell you that a WS can't be bought - it has to be won. It's not how much you spend but who you spend it on. Everyone looks at the big signings as why they won the WS last year. I look at a simple trade - Nick Swisher, the outfielder no one wanted. He brought a spirit into the clubhouse that had been missing for years. I can't remember the last time they were a real team. (Plus, it got rid of Wilson Betemit) A bunch of show ponies won't win - a team will.

Yankees were down 14 games in July ..... on paper, this Mariner team is better.
Yes he is. To fuel the anti-Yankee fire, Cashman would not make the trade for a rental so a contract must be in the works. After Lee kicked our ass again last week in NY, he was asked why he pitched so well there (kicked us in the WS, too). "I like pitching here" .... tipped his hand, didn't he.

Basesball isnt so much as a team sport as others ... Its a collection of individual achievements. Given the talent that the Yankees have on their roster they SHOULD win the WS every year. Thats part of what makes rooting against them so much fun. If they dont win the world series, its a colossal failure, since they are better than almost every team at every position. Compare their 7-8-9 hitters to the rest of the league ... Im not sure how the numbers will look, but I have a good guess

there was a much stronger hand pullin' the strings behind many of cashmans mistakes....
the biggest mistake that cashman made was talkin' that stronger hand out of goin' after big pappi once the twins let him go... george told cashman to go and get papi when he wasn't nearly so big,.. but cashman insisted he didn't have a spot for him as giambi and nick johnson helped fill out 2 of the 25 spots back then...
george knew a thing or two,.. which means i wasn't the only one who noticed that papi was a yankee killer when he was w/ the twinkies (my 2nd favorite team goin' all the way back to the 60's).....

I know ... I said it was his spirit and personality that helped them become a team again. He also reminded them that it is a game and should be fun.
Those numbers are the exact reason he spent the winter with Kevin Long (hitting coach) to fix his swing and Dave Eiland (pitching coach) to fix his throws from RF.

The Yankees spent years depleting the Farm for those big contracts under the direction of King George. It was stupid and didn't win a WS. Now that the team is under Hal the Younger, the farm has been replenished. Money doesn't replenish your farm - good scouting/smart signings do.
to be fair,..the yankees are able to gamble on draft picks that sink to lower rungs due to health concerns or signin' chances... they have the money to risk on guys who either are dealin' w/ injuries that other teams can't afford to gamble on,.. or guys who have mentioned that they will most likley commit to college if bigger bucks aren't on the table... plus they have a bigger pocket to go and scout,..and buy,.. international players... they signed montero at age 16..... he is goin' to hammer the ball in the majors at some point (i have watched him closely for the last 4 springs,..the dude is the strongest yankee hitter),.. but he most likely won't be stayin' behind the plate too long due to his size... w/ that in mind,..and w/ the yankees bein' rock solid in catchin' prospects,.. the yankees will move him for lee....
gotta remember if montero has to move positions as expected,.. where does he go w/ the yankees???.. they are locked into 1st basemen/dh types for years to come w/ the agin' arod and tex under contract for a good many more years...
you know i'm a huge yankee fan,.. but their money does allow them certain gamblin' privileges...

to answer the thread question, would have to say the Patriots, with the Braves/Phillies/Dolphins jockeying for 2nd place. maybe not so much the Dolphins anymore though - that was more of a Marino complex. lol.
it's the Pats because they are a division rival, but mainly because of Belichick. he became the head coach of the Jets and then "resigned as HC of the NYJ" in a note the next fuggin' day! then he takes the Pats job and proceeds to win 3 Super Bowls with them. Arrrggghh!!! Hard to argue with Brady's stats but his incessant whining and complaing to the Officials, looking for flags, drives me up a wall! not to mention The Tuck Rule game, Spygate, Rodney Harrison...

He'll probably get tossed even if he doesn't have a reason. :) I'm still sort of hoping he changes his mind. I think he still enjoys doing it. I think he thought the fans/organization wanted a change because frankly up until this year, things had been going downhill.
Should be a good series, looking forward to it. Both teams are in a better position than they thought they'd be in at the start of the year.
