View Full Version : Movie Tip
Cadillac Records from Netflix. Largely fictional account(based on a true story)about Chess Records and it's major stars. A great cast; the notables Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright, Mos Def as Leonard Chess, Muddy Waters, and Chuck Berry in that order are overshadowed by the powerful performances of Columbus Short as Little Walter, Eamonn Walker as Howlin' Wolf(the greatest blues singer that ever lived)and Beyonce as Etta James. A little too much detail is given to personal lives and they fuck with the time line a bit but if you like the blues or have an interest in popular culture, you'd probably this movie. Besides, any movie with the Wolf as a character can't possibly be bad.
It's also easy to see why Etta James wasn't all too pleased with her portrayal. Her beef should be with the writers instead of Beyonce though.

The Boat That Rocked is a good fun film about a pirate radio station operating from a boat in the North Sea in the 1960s. British comedy with Philip Seymour Hoffman and the always brilliant Bill Nighy.

I didn't hear good things about Cadillac Records, but I believe much of it was shot in NOLA.

would love to see this one.... the pirate radio stations really helped shape '60s rock in England and therefore around the world. I remember an episode of "Secret Agent" with Patrick McGoohan (which he then more or less continued in a more dada context with "The Prisoner") that was set on a pirate radio ship where a deejay using his set to send coded messages to Russian spies or some such thing....
on a related note, tomorrow is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Avast and ahoy!!

"Cadillac Records" looked good and was well-acted, but we had a hard time enjoying it because it had so many inaccuracies. Right after we watched it, we rewatched "The Howling Wolf Story" documentary and rented "The American Folk Blues Festival" (wonderful performances by the blues legends in Europe in the 60's). Both highly recommended and much more satisfieing.
Looking forward to seeing "The Boat that Rocked"!
