On their website, the Iguanas are showing that playing a Cinco de Mayo gig at Tomatillo's on Esplanade...and it's being called a Block Party. Wonder who else is playing?

sunset promotions was running a block party on frenchman street up until last year. i e-mailed them last year and they said they weren't doing last year because of katrina, but would be back again this year.
i am not familiar with tamatillo's, but their myspace site says they are on the corner of esplanade & frenchman. maybe this is part of the frenchamn street block party this year?

also, the block party used to be, for the most part, a bracelet admission for the night for non-stop bands from 9:00 until sunrise at blue nile and cafe brasil with a coll party in the street between. maybe with blue nile being closed the are gonna do a cafe brasil / tamatillo's cinco de mayo latino flare kind of thing. iguana's, los hombres calientes, etc... will be cool to see what comes of this!

Those block parties were amazing. One year (at least) there was a huge tank of nitrous outside Cafe Brasil, and the clubs were letting people walk in with multiple balloons. Just added to the overall mayhem of the whole scene.
Party or no, there's often a tank of nitrous on Frenchmen Street in the midnight hours.

YYR, as I can recall! :D
The doorman at the Blue Nile just said "be careful with those things" when people walked in with them.

I saw that, I thought that was insanely dangerous??I'm thinking the same thing, Amy. I do like my supplementals, but do not want to risk instant death. Nurse IBJammin, your opinion on nitrous oxide consumption, please. And because there's so many damn posts to read thru, may I ask the NOLA residents again if the Esplanade bus is back running along Rampart St. to the fairgrounds. Thanks.

Biggest danger would be an unplanned detention. Balloon inflation was going on on the neutral ground outside of Tip's at a show in 2001 (I think). I was contemplating checking it out about the time a swarm of NO's finest cleared the street, lining up people on the curb in those plastic cable-tie bracelets.

Nitrous oxide produces a sense of euphoria by depriving the user of oxygen. As the nitrous oxide is inhaled, it replaces the oxygen in the user’s lungs.
Symptoms of use are a brief "high", slurred speech, impaired balance, confused thinking, unresponsiveness to stimuli such as noise and pain, and possible loss of consciousness (CGA, 2001).
Risks
Injuries:
Injuries, including broken limbs and head concussions, from falls due to the impaired balance and loss of consciousness associated with nitrous oxide abuse, are not uncommon.
Long-term effects:
Long-term use of nitrous oxide can cause bone marrow suppression, blood cell problems and poisoning of the central nervous system (Winek et al. 1995).
Addiction:
Nitrous oxide can be addictive. Some studies have shown increased tolerance among frequent abusers (Gilman, 1986), which may result in riskier methods of inhalation.
Death:
Nitrous oxide abusers face a very real potential for death by asphyxiation.
Nitrous oxide deaths usually occur when the abuser is trying to increase the effects of the gas by inhaling it in a confined space such as a closet or a car, by putting a plastic bag over his or her head, or when the abuser is trying to prolong the high by inhaling and holding the gas for several minutes or taking a quick series of inhalations (huffing) without breathing normally in between.
Death can occur very quickly, in only a matter of seconds.
Not worth it my humble opinion...

So cool!
I remember being at a Cinco de Mayo street party that featured the Iguanas back in the mid-90s. I found out about it when the Iguanas sax player stopped to chat with a group of people who were in front of me at the Fais Do Do stage one afternoon and I overheard him telling them about it. How different now that everyone (it seems) has internet access!
Looks like it should be a blast. If I make it 2nd weekend, I'll be sure to check this one out. Thank you chrisjoseph for posting the info.

.
the real danger lies not in using the gas but falling out when you pass out and hitting your head on the ground. People have died that way moreso than from the gas.
Not my bag either, no thanks.

Last year, on the second Saturday, there was also a tank at the Southern Comfort stage most of the afternoon. Not sure how they pulled that off!
And, for those that don't know, it's often referred to as "hippy crack". It's a heavy buzz for a minute or two, and then gone. I saw lots of people empty there wallets after Dead shows back in the day. I'm not advocating it, but sitting down, passing a balloon with your friends, can be a lot of fun. Lots and lots of laughter.

the Philly nitrous mafia has some shifty folks. kind of funny to see tanks at these places but it sure does bring the underbelly and sketchy crowd.

This is a great party. The last time I went was in 2000, it used to be held in the warehouse district, can't remember the street corner. The Iguanas played every time I went. Pretty good food and Mexican beers. It was sponsored by a latino radio station, KGLA I think. I've tried to find info on this every year since my last, but couldn't find out anything. Thanks for the info, chris, I'll definately be looking into this one :)

Who needs gas when you have such a great "high" going from the music and atmosphere.
I have done it many times at Dead Shows back in the day but those days are over. Death does not suit me.....my head spins from the music!

...gee i already got that, it's called "at your age"...anyway that's what my doctor said.....
I got a lil bitty chance to speak w/ Cesar Rojas of Los Lobos after their recent show here, I asked about Jazzfest, and he said he didn't think they'd be playing it...but who knows maybe they will come to NOLA afterall.
