20602. The Spotted Cat Music Club ...
by XcockroachX, 9/6/09 16:44 ET
...is set to return.
Looks like Bill (Cafe Negril) has stepped up and is hoping to reopen in about a month or so.
With Curtis behind the bar again!
Glad the Rocky & Jimbeaux soap opera is no longer going to get in the way of this club "re"-opening up...

that's fantastic news!!! :D
I think, more than any other single club, the SPotted Cat was the soul of Frenchmen St.
Its return would be most welcome.

Indeed, it would be.

With their names and reputations, they sound like they should be featured on Jerry Springer

highest drink prices on the street....that said, I hope Bill can usher it's return as it is a shame that a funky lil joint like that lies dormant

I agree Gumbo...it really bummed me out everytime I walked by it. That club needs to be OPEN to keep that street alive! BTW, has Ray's Room re-opened now? I know it's under a new name but can't remember what it is.....anything happening with the old Hookah Cafe?

What is the Rocky and Jimbeaux soap opera?
Cafe Brazil was the 'heart and soul' of Frenchman back in the 90's
What happened there anyway?

The space that Rays was in at 508 Frenchmen has re-opened with the cumbersome name "La Maison de la Musique". It's pretty similar to Rays, except that they have not run out of beer.

Jimbeaux couldn't have screwed up a good thing more if he had tried. The story of the idiocy there is too ridicululous to recap at this point...
Sure hope it comes back the way it was. I play at the Apple Barrel regularly and we often fed off the late night crowd from the Spotted Cat. It helped anchor that side of Frenchmen Street, that's for sure, and is missed by the musicians and the bartenders as well as the fans. The recent foolishness there cost good people a chance to earn money.

They have also redone the floors...not a total renovation but definitely bettah than before. Yes they have a good selection of beer and they know how to make drinks, as opposed to the last staff. Also some people have taken to calling it Club 508 as an abbreviated name. They have relocated the stage to inside the front door to the left and even with the tables they have up front there is plenty of room to fill in the back.

Nothing happening with the Hookah Cafe...word is that the rent is too high. Also, the landlord is requiring food be served there so that may eliminate somebody that just wants to run a club with no food service.

Rocky and Jimbeaux plain and simple are two people that prolly should not be in business at all or if not totally at least not together. Seems the "partnership" was not very amicable, leading to one guy hitting the other guy with a hammer. There was other stuff I am sure between them but I don't know them at all.
Cafe Brazil to the best of my knowledge will remain shuttered as the parcels that make up Lazziza (playing some latin and reggae and now trying to capitalize on the hookah scene, with pizza that isn't too bad) and Yuki (which has a random variety of music and food) seem to be ok for the owner of the building.

That is good news about the reopening. We always dug it. One lazy Sunday afternoon, the Jazz Vipers, or some subset of them, asked us if we wanted to sit in with the band. Ooooh. Thanks, but that would be a huge mistake and regretted by all concerned. But, it was flattering.

We loved Cafe Brazil....so grungy, dark and cool :)

During peak times (like Fest), Lazizza's is usually one of the easiest places on Frenchmen to get a drink or use a bathroom...

I play every Tuesday but the last one of the month at the Apple Barrel with Ken Swartz and The Palace of Sin. Ken does a lot of country blues and we do some reggae, some Al Green and some Muddy along the way, as well. It's a trio these days with Tom Chute on drums, me on bass and Ken on guitar.
I also get gigs in there with my acoustic delta blues duo Shotgun House. J Monque 'D does it with us sometimes, as well.

Me too, Sistah! When I am mayor, Frenchmen will return to its, albeit brief, heyday. ;)
