George Clinton and P-Funk have been a Fest night-show staple for the past several years, despite not being on the actual Jazzfest line-up for quite a while now..........
I wonder if this year they will finally be back at the Fairgrounds.
(I have actually run into George twice flying down to Fest in the past few years during layovers in the Dallas or Houston airports. Both times he has been in a wheelchair, with two VERY young women acting as his assistants. His taste in "health care workers" seems to run to extremely "physically fit" providers, and thier dress code is a bit more "casual" than the norm)

Would love to see Baaba Maal. Got turned on to him several years ago after hearing a piece about him on NPR and immediately bought his then-newest album Nomad Soul, which is excellent. I still listen to and enjoy it often.
Looking likely that we're doing FQF with our kids next year instead of Fest though, so unfortunately I'll probably have to miss this. I will try to catch him in NYC the following weekend.

What?! we'll sure miss you.
What?! we'll sure miss you.
Thanks. It certainly won't be easy to miss Fest and all that comes with it (and especially the patry and other TH events/meetups/company). I've wanted to check out FQF for a while and I think this is the right call for us for next year. Our two older girls did a full week of Fest with us twice when they were younger and they have been clamoring to come back to Fest with us since--and really, really turning up the heat lately. But now that they are school-aged we really can't do it with them because it is during their school time. FQF falls during the first weekend of their April break so we will be able to stay around for several more days afterwards. Mrs. Lit and I also won't be able to pull of Fest without the kids again for some time, primarily because my folks fumbled a bit during their stint watching them this past Fest and we really don't have any other options to make it work. And I have attended solo so many times that I really don't want to push it again--at least until after we've brought the kids back.
So...ever the long-term strategery planner, I'm thinking FQF with the whole family next year; solo Fest for me in 2011; and then in 2012 our oldest should be old enough to watch over her two younger sisters (with some help from in-laws, etc.) for a return Fest trip by me and Mrs. Lit for then--and beyond (unless I get hooked on FQF...).

You just might, this will be our third...it is very cool. Not Jazz Fest. But then again, they don't do the Lindy Hop on Bourbon at Jazz Fest, nor do they have a battle of the bands on Royal. Or Three stages on the Mississippi and one plus an art show in Jackson Square.
We also may miss Jazz Fest this year...but then again might not. I have a hard time even writing that. Regardless, TTL for Crawfish Fest.

Thanks Mich. And thanks as well for the healing vibes. Great to know that you and Marcia will be at FQF.
YYR on CFF. Funny that we thought that would satisfy the girls and keep them from pestering us about returning to Fest; after last year's CFF their desire to return to New Orleans is only stronger now. And when I told them that they'd likely get to see Shorty, Big Sam, Paul Sanchez, Rebirth, Kermit, and Marcia Ball, among others, at FQF, they were sold. I think we'd doing them (and us) a disservice if we didn't try to keep fostering their love of the same music and culture that we enjoy so much.

Yep. Darius Rucker will be the country BNA that day. But he needs to have a few big hits between now and then. I'm guessing the Nashville music machine already has that all figured out.

I would bet that the 4/25 show will be an all-blues set by the full band, (if it was for example, to be an Ed Volker solo set, it would not be listed as a Radiators show) as the Radiators announced a couple of all blues-standards specific shows they have planned for Tipitinas...........

From an email from Butch Trucks.........
Let’s talk about Allman Brothers Band activity for 2010. Next year, the ABB tour schedule will consist of fewer concerts than we normally play. We are going to be very selective with the number of shows that we play. There certainly will be opportunities for all of you to see us live. But there won't be as many opportunities as there have been in other years. When we do play for you, every show will be significant as you will see when I explain it.
We know that The Allman Brothers Band will appear at The Wanee Festival on April 16 and 17. And we know that we will appear at the New Orleans Jazz Festival later in April.

I was just thinking since they are a BNA they would do a Saturday or Sunday close out on Acura...so that led me to my guess..maybe or maybe not but 1st weekend seems likely but again what do I know;)
We all just guess and guess some more
Hi Barb by the way...you making CFF again this year? CFF is a for sure, JF is up in the air right now.
Got the email too! The only other planned dates are the annual NYC run, which will be some place other than the Beacon this year. Butch did say last year that ABB would be touring much less as some of the band is getting a bit older...

I agree about Stanley's smooth-jazz stuff, although I've never stopped liking his jazz-rock fusion work, and I have to say that I was knocked out by the recent RTF reunion tour, which I caught in Clearwater. Stanley, Chick Corea, Al D and Lenny White all were superb, and, for me, it was clear that their playing has benefited from the huge variety of musical experiences they've had since RTF officially called it quits several decades ago.
As a bassist whose earliest musical heroes (on bass) were Stanley and Jaco, I have to confess that any time Stanley is in range, I'll be there. In addition to his amazing chops on bass guitar, he's a terrific upright player - one of the best "doublers" out there, IMO, along with John Patitucci and Christian McBride, among others.
Not sure who Stanley is playing with at Jazz Fest, but he's lately been doing Europe and the U.S. with Corea, Clarke & White (basically, RTF minus Al). His latest CD, the Stanley Clarke Trio's "Jazz in the Garden" is basically a straight-ahead effort with White (drums) and pianist Hiromi.
That's the group I'd most like to see at Fest - unless he were to put together an all-star acoustic jazz group.

Stanley has done so many forms of jazz, played with so many greats, with so many differing styles. He played on one of my all time most favorite jazz albums- Joe Farrel's "Moon Germs", which either coincided or pre-dated RTF. In the 90's he teamed with George Duke, and Larry Carlton/Billy Cobham, and Rite of Strings w/ DiMeola & Ponty. Recent years have seen him team with Bela Fleck, and various projects w/ Lenny White. If you haven't heard any of the tour with Victor Wooten & Marcus Miller, it is very cool! No telling what he might do at Fest...

Saw Stanley Clarke with Chick Corea and Lenny White at the Hollywood Bowl a few months ago and it was just astounding. Both Clarke and White were in superb form, and Clarke was very funny and humble when he was given the mic to introduce some of the pieces. (Bill Connors was a special guest for a few pieces, making it a reunion of the early RTF lineup...)

Interesting premise, but I for one could do without her presence.
And recent evidence, down in my neck of the woods seems to show that lip-synching properly is also beyond her capabilities at present.

Trombone Shorty's talent and intense work pace has been rewarded with a No. 1 album debut on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz chart. Released September 13, 2011, 'For True,' also debuted at No. 72 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. That just made my day!
I'm thrilled that both of these excellent bands will be getting their chance to shine at Fest!
If anyone out there is a fan of either Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys or Asleep At The Wheel, you owe it to yourself to pickup a copy of Washboard Rodeo. It's a fantastic album of Western swing.

A nice piece yesterday from a Dallas Morning News columnist suggesting Ray Benson for their "Texan of the Year" award:
Asleep at the Wheel veteran Ray Benson is my top Texan
- Jacquielynn Floyd
The Texas Legislative Conference, a bipartisan forum of the state’s top political and business leaders, beat me to the punch in my choice for the 2011 Dallas Morning News Texan of the Year.
Back in March, they awarded their own “Texan of the Year” title — an honor whose previous recipients include Barbara Jordan and Laura Bush — to Ray Benson.
Who, you say?
The oversized, longhaired, baritone-voiced cowboy who has fronted the legendary Texas swing band Asleep at the Wheel for nearly half a century. Oh, yeah — that guy!
Benson (or “Brother Ray” as I sometimes think of him, taking the liberty as a longtime fan) is first and foremost about the music.
But he’s also a kinetic force of superhuman proportions, an unlikely mover and shaker with a dozen projects on the stove at any given time, frequently with a view to helping somebody out.
Benson, based in Austin since the early 1970s, has sheltered new talent and founded his own recording studio. He co-founded or sits on boards of organizations that assist Texas musicians when they fall on hard times.
He co-wrote and stars in A Ride With Bob, the Bob Wills tribute play. He records the occasional solo album — all while touring with the Wheel as many as 150 nights a year.
And it was Benson who, together with another Austin musician, hatched the idea in September to stage an all-star concert to benefit victims of the wildfires that wiped out more than 1,600 homes in Central Texas on Labor Day weekend.
The concert, pulled together in an absurdly quick five weeks, featured such headliners as Willie Nelson, George Strait, the Dixie Chicks and (of course) Asleep at the Wheel. That single event raised three-quarters of a million dollars for fire victim relief.
Although the Wheel has earned nine Grammys over the years, Benson resisted in April when a proposal was floated to see Texas swing designated the “Official Music of Texas.”
“I would hate to have to stand next to my fellow musicians who play blues, rock and roll, jazz, opera and say, ‘Your music is not our official Texas music,’” he told The Dallas Morning News.
Benson has never been particularly awestruck by his celebrity status. “I don’t like limos; I like buses,” he told music journalist Joe Nick Patoski in a 2003 interview. “I don’t want to be a superstar at all.”
How he endures the grueling pace is a mystery. The secret to the Wheel’s phenomenal longevity is its frequent infusion of fresh talent as road-weary veterans leave the band.
In 40 years, it has seen 90 members. Benson, the heart of the Wheel, is its constant unifying element.
And how a 6-foot-5 Jewish kid from Philadelphia came to embody what’s best about Texas — energy, talent, generosity, humility — is too long a story to tell here.
Let’s just say we could use a lot more Texans like Ray Benson.

With the announcement hours away it really doesn't matter, but Steve Earle announced during his Tampa show Friday that he and the band will be at JF on May 5th.

I can't do the story justice in writing, but any Deadheads who are fans of James Cotton, remind me to tell you my little story about meeting him, and his heartfelt words about playing with Jerry Garcia....

I just received an email that the Moody Blues are playing in Atlanta on March 24th. Wanna bet they will wind up being one of the BNA's at fest?

I enjoy the Moodies, but they dont seem the kind of band that Jazzfest tends to book (ie, not connected to roots music and not a massive commercial success, at least not lately). If they want to get an old prog band, Yes and Rush are out there...

They were here last year the Wednesday before opening day at UNO. I would be surprised to see them back down here so soon and also at the fest.
