Earlier this year, a friend here in Dallas used Ning (http://www.ning.com/) set up his own social networking site for the DFW Blues Community (http://texasbluesroadhouse.ning.com/). Think of it as a mini-Facebook, built around folks with a common interest. It's all free.
Ning has added audio and video chat, and my friend decided to try using it for a webcast. On Tuesday, he went to a local blues jam that was held at a club with wireless. He brought his laptop, plus a relatively inexpensive mic and webcam. He aimed them at the stage, and entered the chat room. Just like that, anyone worldwide could hear and see the jam. (He had permission from the host band, of course).
Less than $1000 worth of equipment, or less than $100 if you already have a laptop, and a gig at a club with wireless, and Voila! You can host your own instant webcast.
I thought that was pretty cool.
