As far as the previous conversation about the US Senate spot, does Schilling still live in Medfield (in Drew Bledsoe's old house)? I thought he was selling it. You don't have to reside to win but you have to reside there to serve.

Work is forcing us to use at least one vacation day each month from July-Dec. That doesn't leave me with enough vacation time to take 10-12 days for Europe. Of course, we're welcome to take as many days as we want, unpaid of course. Belgium and The Netherlands are gonna have to wait until next year :(

Kathryn Kennedy, a California Winemaker, Dies at 82

Kathryn Kennedy, a California vintner who took up winemaking in her 40s and produced highly rated cabernet sauvignon at her tiny estate winery in Saratoga, in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, died in Saratoga on Aug. 23. She was 82.

The cause was cancer, said her son Marty Mathis, who now runs the Kathryn Kennedy Winery and has been its winemaker since 1981.

Ms. Kennedy was among the first women in California to establish a wine label in her name. Formerly in the home-building business with her husband, Raymond Mathis, and later, after their divorce, an art student at San Jose State University, she became interested in winemaking after traveling in Europe as well as watching workmen tend vineyards near her Saratoga home, not far from Silicon Valley.

“She also wanted to be a conservationist of the land,” her son said. “She didn’t want it to become a development.”

Ms. Kennedy attended classes for a short time in the viticulture program at the University of California, Davis, and she adopted the lesson she was taught there: that high-caliber wine should be a 100 percent varietal (that is, made from a single grape variety) and that the grapes should come from a single vineyard site.

That approach governed the development of her vineyard, which she started in 1973. She planted all her available land, seven acres, with cabernet sauvignon grapes.

Her first wines were introduced in 1979, and through 1988 the winery produced only estate cabernet — that is, cabernet sauvignon grown, produced and bottled on the same property.

The process was hardly mass production. The winery made fewer than 600 cases of wine a year, but the product gained renown for its full flavor, depth of color and aging potential.

Helen Kathryn Kennedy was born on July 28, 1927, in Ruth, Nev., and grew up in Santa Cruz, Calif. She graduated from Stanford University and moved to Saratoga in 1949. In addition to her son Marty, she is survived by a sister, Joan Morocco of Saratoga; two other sons, Dan, of Foresthill, Calif., and Scott, of North Lake Tahoe, Calif.; a daughter, Paula, of Laguna Beach, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

The winery has grown somewhat in recent years, producing several wines in addition to its signature estate cabernet, a total of some 7,000 cases annually.

“When I came along as the rebellious young son, I started goofing around with other things,” Mr. Mathis said. “But for her it was only about her property and that one single-grape cabernet.”

Yeah, I've been doing more than my own share of herding cats the last couple of weeks, but the end is in sight if I can manage to get through Sept 20 without slapping someone publicly.

Don't forget the theory of the "crap quota" either. For every broken piece, you produce a better one. Break enough and the final product will be damn close to perfect. And you'll have met more of your lifetime quota of crap along the way too!!!

He got out of the driver side and walked to the front of the patrol car. I came around to ask for her DL and she was sitting there basically naked from the waist up by the time I got to her window. She had seen him getting out of the car but not me. She got 2 tickets instead of one.

I agree about the speech and Wozniacki played a great match. Oudin is something though. Quite a spitfire. I like players that have emotion and fire. She's only 17 so she's going to get better. And Justine Henin is her idol and that's a pretty good example to follow.

What goes well with 1/2" emt conduit? I'm on a first name basis with the guys in electrical at Lowe's and Home Depot after dealing with them all day. I can't imagine why they would be confused about a bunch of little blue haired quilters literally buying out their stock of conduit and begging them to get more shipped in for us. Some people just have no imagination. I think they all work at Lowe's too.
