It was nice. The first school for us to visit. We have a couple more 4/9-12. Decision time is before May 1st, so it will be over soon.....We had a very nice dinner with Stax and Eileen.

Cool. Sound like you are gone FQF . Maybe we will catch with you the following week as we are there until the 16th.

I have a nephew who just got an interesting offer. He is graduating from high school and is something of a sensation as a young entrepreneur, has two businesses and just wrote a book on web sites for small businesses. When I see you, ask me about it...

Hellooo, bar peeps! :) We're just back from a 24 hour trip to Salt Lake and back, Natalie's docs decided after MRI that the risk of replacing her aneurysm is still greater than the risk of rupture, so no surgery this year! Unfortunately, we can't find her fave pink bunny anywhere and we're afraid we left it at the hospital, ack!

Hey Amy. Sounds like a tough call on Little Nat's condition. Hope the bunny shows up. My nephew had a yellow fuzzy duck that was special...my sister tried to replace it once with an identical, but cleaner, stuffed toy. But the second duck just became "false ducky" and always remained just a toy. The "real" Ducky was much much more than that.

Hi Mich! Natalie's issues are very uncommon, so there's no standard for when is the right time for surgery, but we think her docs are great and we trust them, and are just glad we aren't looking at surgery now :) The bunny situation is bad though, that thing is beat to heck but she's soo attached to it -- it's in such bad shape that if I found it cleaning up, I'd toss it, we'll have to call Primary Children's tomorrow and see if there's any hope. She already has a replacement yellow bunny that she is not accepting as a substitue at all, haha!

That sounds tasty! Just a water night here. Trying to keep warm, our propane ran out last night and the delivery truck did not show up today as promised, so no hot water, stove, dryer or heat. We took a "bath" in the hot tub and are running space heaters tonight. Fun fun!

I think all we have is vodka and some amaretto. Beer and wine too, but I'll probably just call it a night soon. It's actually staying pretty warm in here with the space heaters, despite the fact that it just keeps snowing outside (a little break this evening before it starts coming down hard again). Our immediate forecast: CAN'T WAIT FOR FEST!!

Intercontinental, we got a great deal on priceline this fall. Not worried about leaving the kids, they do great with their grandparents, we'll just miss them during the day at Fest when we know they'd be having fun, but will love having the freedom to do things at night :)

Yeah .... bumped up to Crew Leader - Code for "how much shit can you take from above & below". I was part of the overnight Homeless Count. It was pretty intense here in L.A. I was up for 24 hours (not that hard for me;)) and worked at least 18 of them. In 48 hours, we enumerated all shelters, food banks, cars/rv's and people sleeping on the streets. Really hard when we realized that we could easily be one of them.

Now we're on Group Homes, Nursing Homes, etc. It's really distressing how many people need so much help in this country and how most of it is privately funded. We're hoping that our counts will help some of these very good people get some public help.

Can't wait for Fest but also feel slightly guilty ..........

Hey, can I ask you a census question? We got something in the mail awhile ago saying our census form was coming in 10 days, but we never got a form. Can we just go online and fill one out? Or is it more complicated than that. So strange we didn't get a form . . .

Our form was hand-delivered by a NOLA version of FG - but that's probably because they've been very concerned about the many still-empty post-Katrina residences out here.

But there are a lot of local businesses that are closed for "mud season" (ie, between the close of ski season -- which is now after next weekend -- and "summer" -- mid-June or so).

You know what chaps my azz? I've got a case where every single plaintiff absolutely committed loan fraud. Their actual income was about $5,000 monthly, and they put $30,000 per month on their loan applications. Then they signed right above the warning that providing false information is a federal crime punishable by x y and z.

Of course they made no payments, defaulted, etc. Then sued everybody in sight. At least one of the banks not only completely released them but repaired their credit. Proof of their loan fraud was sent to US Atty, but no one is doing anything about it. No one cares. People like that get away with loan fraud, and we, in doing good, have to worry about the things we've been worrying about today.

The world is f-ed up.

We moved all of our "good wines" down from Jeff's Dad's house yesterday -- we need to move the huge wine fridge down too but it's so heavy we need help!! (A friend of ours has a painting biz and a client was just going to throw it away -- no way, we could use it!)

We've got a case of 2001-2003 estate/reserve pejus, a lot of nice Ledsons, a case of even older Clos du Vals, a couple of Silver Oaks and several special Tuscan wines from our honeymoon over there. Going to open one bottle of something, tonight while packing or tomorrow night when drawing the first round of raffle tix, hmmm . . . .

Where's Scoop!!!

This is the 2nd year Hughes has almost thrown a No Hitter while I'm out of the loop in NOLA!!

Just got home .... haven't logged in for 2 weeks .... there are 13 1/2 pages of unread posts. Not even going to attempt them all. What are the essential reads?

What are the essential reads?

The PQA gumbo was wonderful.
The PQA gumbo was not good.
Loved the trout!
The trout sucked!
Van was sublime.
Van sucked.
Patry photos were posted.
More Patry photos were posted.
Crawfish pics were posted. Maybe from Patry.
People got drunk.
People ate food.
People listened to music.
The music was good.
The music was great.
None of the music was bad. Well, maybe the stuff in the elevator.
The Parc St Charles didn't give anyone cooties, or clean towels.
Everybody was happy to see everyone else.
Everybody hugged.
We all love/miss each other.
Dancing happened.
Several people made plans to return next year.

I think that pretty much covers it. Just pick any 3 and mix-n-match.

must be time for cocktails!!

It must be time to throw everyone who is too fucking stupid to use a computer but does anyway out the window. Or bash them over the head with it. Or maybe just stuff it up their ass.

Or it might just be time for a cocktail. A really, really big one.

LOL....they need to. My nephew posts inappropriate things (although he has gotten better) and I would tell him to delete all the time. College, jobs, it affects everything.

Pairings: White Sangria and Red Sangria
By FLORENCE FABRICANT

Cavas, often blessed with notes of citrus and spring blossoms, are genial sparkling wines, all the more so because of their modest prices. They can be called on for many occasions, and are the ideal finishing touch for sangria, either red or white. The white sangria is unusual and strong, though white wine in place of manzanilla sherry will moderate the alcohol. The red is clearly classic. Both are more refreshing than sweet.

White Sangria

Adapted from Kerin Auth, Tinto Fino, Manhattan

Time: 20 minutes, plus at least 4 hours’ refrigeration

2 apples, cored and coarsely diced

2 pears, cored and coarsely diced

2 juice oranges, peeled, seeded and diced

1 cup gin

1/2 cup triple sec

3bottles (500 milliliters each) manzanilla sherry or 2 bottles (750 milliliters each) dry white wine

1/2 bottle cava (1 1/2 cups), chilled.

1. Place all fruit in a bowl with gin and triple sec. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours, or overnight.

2. Transfer to a large pitcher and add manzanilla or white wine. Stir. Divide liquid and fruit into wine glasses, over ice if desired, until about 2/3 full. Top each with cava.

Yield: 8 to 10 servings.

Red Sangria

Adapted from Rafael Mateo, Pata Negra, Manhattan

Time: 1/2 hour, plus 4 hours’ refrigerating

1 bottle red wine, preferably garnacha

Juice of 1 1/2 oranges

Juice of 1 lemon

Juice of 1 lime

1/2 cup Spanish brandy

1/4 cup triple sec

1 apple, cored and sliced

1 pear, cored and sliced

1 cinnamon stick

1/2 bottle cava (1 1/2 cups), chilled.

1. Combine wine, citrus juices, brandy, triple sec, sliced fruit and cinnamon in a 2-quart pitcher. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours, or overnight.

2. Add 2 cups ice and the cava. Pour into wine glasses with some fruit.

Yield: 4 to 6 servings.

LMA...not till we get some $$$... Not much traveling this year. Al is transitioning from owning a landscaping co to...wait....becoming a luthier (guitar building and repair). Yes, way out there. My brother has a shop and a school here in NJ. It's a little easier on the body than landscaping.
And, no matter what the economy, music is always there, people always play...
