Hey, Baconwrapped, this is your neck of the woods, right?

Rockwell
1714 N. Vermont Ave
(enter off alley behind Vermont Restaurant)
Los Feliz
Los Angeles, CA 90027

Sazeracs Under a Hidden Coral Tree

You don't need a reason to get excited about the holiday weekend. You need a reason to get excited about coming back.

Like…drinks under the shade of a giant coral tree in a hidden charmer of a back-alley alfresco bar.

Welcome to Rockwell, whose long-awaited debut is finally at hand.

You won't see it from the street—but next time you're at Vermont Restaurant for dinner, you can keep the party moving by finding your way to the sprawling indoor-outdoor (but mostly outdoor) enclave behind. Hint: there's a separate entrance via the alley out back.

With 6000 square feet of multi-level nooks and crannies, you've got plenty of discreet granite tables and distressed leather chairs to claim for a few rounds of Sazerac Vermonts (bitters, absinthe and Rittenhouse rye) or Anti-Ritas (silver tequila, Veev, acai-blueberry juice, lime and agave syrup). And/or some 22-ounce tangerine wheat beers.

If you skipped dinner altogether, you can also summon a Shortrib and Fried Shallot Flatbread Pizza or a plate of Rockwell Tacos with taro-root shells, spicy tuna, jicama and avocado.

Officially it opens on the 11th, but if you, esteemed readers, feel the need to drop in a night early, well, we'll see you on the 10th.

oh, it's no big deal.... I'm not anti-drink or anything... nor am I in recovery... I just simply don't drink. Many years ago alcohol and drugs started making me feel bad, so I stopped using them... simple as that. (and yes, I know it's not as simple as that for many people...)

Good for you!! We have a few others around here who have made the same choice.

You can try the food & we'll try the Sazeracs!! ;)

now, that said... I do sample a drink now and then... such as at Adelaide's when they've brought us out a Corpse Reviver No. 2 "tree" of shot glasses... mmmm, tasty.

I've also sampled this signature cocktail of theirs:

The Adelaide Swizzle $6.50
New Orleans Amber Rum, fresh squeezed lime juice, bitters, a splash of soda and our secret ingredient!

Yeah, Adelaide is a must-visit... every time we've been there it's been one of our dining highlights of that trip.

Arthur ain't got nothin' to do with the guides any more... he sold that line ages ago.

but anyway, most of the info in the book is free on line.... so no excuse for ignoring Mary's great advice. ;)

Hey, I'm the one posting from the website all the time! I get the daily newsletter. Just think food advice is better in that other guide.

well, I guess we'll just respectfully disagree. Zagat is good, but I think Mary's Fommer's dining advice can't be beat. Of course, I may be biased. :D

appreciated, Fest.... Mary's approach is opinionated, often colorfully so, but fair... mostly trying to arm readers with information so they can make choices based on their tastes. there is a reason that this is one of Frommer's top-selling guides (as is Mary's Las Vegas book)...

By the way, I passed on word about the new L.A. sazeracs place to Chuck Taggart who had not heard of it... he was a bit dubious of the concepts presented, but is very willing to give it a try. For the sake of science, of course.

Well, it is in LA ..... concepts are dubious and places need to be tried before they are popular.

I'm also willing to take one for the team .... got to alert people if the place is no good. ;)

Are you going to PGF @ The Knitting Factory tonight?

By the way, intrigued by the lineup in the other room at the Knitting Factory... bands from the '80s label 415 Records that was run by my old pal Howie Klein (no relation to Craig!)... Wire, Translator, Romeo Void... some pretty good radio songs back in those days.

Nope, I'm not Chuck... but am a close friend of his and we have consumed bacon and bacon-wrapped goods together on many many occasions. not to mention many a crawfish. and many other caloric delights.

My identity is no secret... just look up the story about the Threadheads that ran on Grammy.com in May. That's me... I was probably in your way at the Patry. If so, please accept my heartfelt apology.
