Sorry for the late response...it's been a bit hectic at summer's end.
I won't be camping as I'm trying to pool my resources for Festgiving and must make some sacrifices. I will be attending at least one day, and quite possibly two (Sat/Sun, not Fri). I'll know better next week...
I hate to be the bearer of bad news...I spoke with Lit yesterday and he has an issue with one of his eyes that will prevent him from attending all together. He feels awful as he was one of the primary torch bearers for this event, but his condition leaves him no choice. He is unable to use his computer for a while and asked me to let everyone know.
He has two camping ticket for sale as a result. He's willing to work out a deal for those intersested. You can leave a message here if you're interested and I can pass it on, or get you in direct contact. Mrs. Lit and their daughters will be going probably Sat/ Sun for those who were looking forward to seeing them.
Let's send some TH love his way and hope for him to recover quickly...

I'm afraid it's not looking good for me either!
When I bought my ticket, I assumed that I would have a new car by now.
Between travel, work (company is in chapter and liquidating) and the cash for clunkers promotion (my '98 pontiac grand prix didn't qualify because it gets 19 mph; my arze it does!), I haven't had much of an opportunity and when I have looked, there's not much left on the lots.
I've been told that it wouldn't be smart to drive my car any long distances and frankly, its not worth fixing. A last minute rental would cost too much so...
if anyone is interested in my camping ticket, let me know. I will except any reasonable offer and I'd like to donate the proceeds to Threadhead Records/Rick Trolsen project. I can be contacted via the bored or email ivyelysian at comcast dot net.
I'm so sorry guys. I was the one fired up about this and now I'm wimping out.

Yes they are!
Indeed. R & R is a wonderful festival and the Threadheads were well represented with Malo, Sharon Loves Fats, Lisa and Joe RI, Wladybugw, and Wahinemicha at the Threadhead Commune. Also spotted in attendance were Jordan, Zbonnie and Mrs. Lit.
Big thanks to Lisa and Joe who served as tour guides and camping-spot-holders for us newbies. And to Joe's friend Mike who smoked ribs and an off-the-hook andouille-stuffed pork loin on his portable smoker Friday night.
Oh, there was music too. Highlight on Friday was an hour set by The Lee Boys followed by a terrific set entitled "Sacred Grass Jam" with The Lee Boys teamed up with The Travelin' McCourys. I didn't think bluegrass and sacred steel would work well together but it sure did. One of my favorite sets of the year. On Saturday, Tab Benoit did a solo hour on the Workshop Stage, playing songs and answering questions from the audience. His full band set was good but unremarkable. Asleep at the Wheel followed and demonstrated why they are THE torchbearers for Western Swing. Hot Tuna ended with a good but somewhat understated performance for an evening closer.
Sunday featured Papa Mali who was much better than the other few times I've seen him. Highlight was Jerry Douglas who did an hour solo in the Workshop Stage (like Tab) and then on the big stage with his full band. If he isn't the best dobro player in the world, I'd sure like to see who is. The closer was a new band for me, Great Big Sea, who performed some rollicking pumped-up Canadian sea shanties and some great acapella ballads.
Some of the best fun comes after the last set. Many campers bring their instruments and have impromptu jams all around the campground. It was fun wandering around well past midnight hearing great music under a beautiful clear sky lit by a waning moon. This festival is a blast.

Nice review Murray, I am so glad you had a good time and that you made it home safely! Thanks for sharing those wonderful Bbq shrimp - would love to have the recipe! Sorry I didn't get to say good bye - I was up til 4:30 am jamming so when I stumbled out of the van at 9:30 you were already gone....
too tired to write a full report right now, but I just want to say that it was great having some Threadheads join us for Rhythm and Roots this year! We have been doing this festival so long (20+ years including when it was at its former location at Stepping Stone Ranch in Escoheag) and it was a pleasure to be able to be able to share it with some of you. I hope you will return!

Also want to thank Lisa and Joe and Mike and Karen who are long timers to this festival for making it possible for us all to camp together. Dave for bringing the awesome Bloody Mary's. Murray for the great shrimp and acquiring a RI accent in under 2 days. Michelle for the wonderful greens and sauces and husband Chris for the brews. And Sharon for being Sharon. Was a great time for me and a great way to end the summer. It was some kind of chilly Sunday night though, looks like camping season is over for me for the year.....Cindee

It was great to see everyone there, it was a great time, although I only did Saturday. I missed out on Chris' homebrews, but had some of Murray's shrimp (nice job!). The weather couldn't have been better that's for sure. Lit was healing up fine, but it was still a bit soon for game action, but will be back soon. I got Sharon staying at my place while she works over the city of Boston...I'm sure she'll chime in once she gets home.
Summer's over...it's dark when I get up, my head is full of pollen and I'm sneezing my azz off, but I know that Festgiving and hockey season is creeping up...

It was our pleasure to get everyone camping together – things unfolded just as I had hoped. Joe and I were able to return to our traditional spot with most of our fest-camping krewe, set up a mini Threadhead Village adjacent to us, and lots of our jamming buddies were nearby as well, so it worked out perfectly. HUGE thanks to Mike, for helping to save the space alongside our other friends Joe and Deb, and for the awesome barbecue on Friday afternoon, and to Karen (aka Bellaluna) for bringing us whatever we needed from the outside world. It was great meeting Michele (Wahinemicha), Chris and Gabe, and having you all with us - thanks for the delicious side dishes/ hot sauce/ pickles/ beer – you really know how to do it right! Cindee, my late night friend, thanks for bringing the JELLO ! By Monday I think there were just 3 left out of the 100???? You know it just ain’t a Threadhead party without it… ;) that and bacon of course which Steeleye brought, as well as the delicious shrimp. Malo, thanks for the Bloody Mary’s – we’ll have to visit your bar in Boston for more, unless Sharon gets the recipe while she’s up there! So glad Sharon was able to make it, even if it was only for Sat & Sun!
Musically, the Lee boys with the Travellin’ McCoury’s on Friday were a highlight for me as well, and the first song was like a mantra for the weekend – “Let’s celebrate –we gonna have a good time! ”. Friday was loaded with other great music as well. Nouveau Honkies, the Duhks, and I was pleasantly surprised by Eilen Jewell - last time I saw her she was more folky sounding, but this time she had a killer rockabilly / Americana band with her. Too bad they showed up late due to traffic problems and had to shorten their set. RE: the Travellin’ McCoury’s - it was nice to have some real bluegrass at Rhythm and Roots this year for a change, just as it is nice to have the Red Stick Ramblers or Steve Riley show up at Grey Fox.
Tab’s set in the workshop tent on Saturday was similar to the shows I’ve seen him do at Chan’s in Woonsocket - he is best in a smaller venue. Besides the jokes and stories of playing in the swamps, he was also able to enlighten the audience to the plight of the Louisiana wetlands, mentioning the Voice of the Wetlands fest and other things he is involved with. As he pointed, out, we too have a lot of wetlands in RI and they are all worth protecting.
I love Jerry Douglas’ music, but when I saw him on the schedule for Sunday night, I was worried he was going to put us to sleep - far from it! People were actually dancing to it on the dance floor near the main stage. I was one of them - that was the best way to stay warm, too. Great Big Sea was an excellent choice for a closing act with their raucous energy and fun songs and even a light show! That was my first time seeing them but hopefully it won’t be the last.
I know some people had financial limitations this year that prevented them from coming – I should have mentioned earlier that R&R is a volunteer run festival, and that can be a good low cost way to enjoy the fest. In exchange for a few hours work each day you get free weekend camping pass/admission, meals, a t-shirt and more fun than you can imagine. I did it for many years, and still do at Grey Fox bluegrass festival. I just can’t at R&R anymore because I don’t want to miss anything, and I love playing music after hours. This is the most accordion friendly and diverse-jamming festival I go to… and I do have to sleep some time! But some of you may want to consider the volunteer option and, I’ll try to remind people about that next spring.
Once again, I really want to thank all the new people for coming, esp. those that travelled a great distance… and I sincerely hope you and even more Threadheads and other music lovers will join us for Rhythm and Roots again. If you like Cajun/ Louisiana and other roots-music, being in RI for Labor Day weekend is the next best thing to being in Louisiana in October/November... as Steve Riley so eloquently recounted in the closing set on the dance stage, RI's Cajun / LA roots run deep starting with Dewey Balfa’s visit to Newport Folk fest in 1964 and going through more than 2 decades of Cajun festivals here in the Biggest Little which has evolved into a more diverse lineup.
I didn’t take a lot of pictures myself because I kept forgetting to charge the camera batteries, and frankly I was having too good of a time to stop and take pix. But I know some of the threadhead paparazzi were snapping away so I hope to see those soon!
And for those that missed it, many of the sets are available for streaming on MVY Radio.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts and well wishes folks. Just back from the doctor and got cleared for reading and computer. Still have physical restrictions for another two weeks, which is driving me crazy, but I'm happy to be on the road to recovery. Having now detached and repaired the retinas in both eyes I am hopeful that I am done with these issues for good once I am cleared of any post-surgical issues. Some of you may recall that I had the same problem with my other eye almost exactly a year ago. That has recovered better than new (for me) and I'd be thrilled to end up with the same result this time.
Obviously I was incredibly bummed to miss R&R this year--I think it's the first time I've missed in 12 years. Mrs. Lit and our girls, as well as the rest of our usual krewe, had a great time and I am happy that they and so many of you were able to make it and enjoy the great lineup and weather. I hope to see all of you and more there next year.
The streams from wmvy are the next best thing to being there; I've enjoyed almost all of them (still waiting for them to post the Jerry Douglas set). Can't wait for an opportunity to see the Duhks and Great Big Sea for myself--they both sound great, and I bought an album from each of them from iTunes after listening to their R&R sets. Both albums are excellent.

But the biggest thanks goes to y'all for sharing your great company with me :)
And one last big THANK YOU to Malo for putting me up while I visited Boston. What a great city!

Just wanted to add thanks for everyone's very warm welcome and friendship. It was very cool of all of you to welcome my family into the TH community with all the kindness and gusto you showed us all weekend. Chris now knows I have not been delusional about what a cool group of folks you are, (relief :) ) and he looks forward to future events and to meeting more of y'all. Gabe had the time of his life camping and hangin out. He really enjoyed the music, and the laid back atmosphere within the community. Mike, incredible smoked/grilled deliciousness; Murray. finger lickin great bbq shrimp; Lisa/Karen ,frittata/bagels/coffee for breakfast wake-up saviours; Malo Dave, awesome bloody marys; Cindee, JELLO; and to anyone and everyone else there, you all are the BEST ! MAHALO!
Until we meet next time, be well and see ya 'round the boreds.
