View Full Version : Call for Volunteers - Ms Lena's Brigade
Carolina Beadhead
02-25-2007, 08:11 PM
We are ready to take signups now! Go to www.threadheads.org (http://www.threadheads.org) and click on the Volunteer link on the popup menu at Ms Lena's Brigade.
Ms Lena has confirmed that she will again be able to offer a complimentary 1-day fest ticket for each volunteer for each day you work a shift. These are weekend-specific but can be used any day of that weekend. Details about using these tickets will be covered on the upcoming Details & Info page when it becomes active. She also has a limited number of parking passes so request those sparingly. (Volunteer Parking lots are located off Belfort Ave. near the volunteer entry gate.) She will also have official Zulu Diamondcutter's Krewe Tshirts for each volunteer.
There will be two shifts each fest day: 9:45 am - 2pm and 2pm - 6pm. You may split a 4-hour shift with someone but I need you to only sign up as one person. We need a body count... not necessarily a complete roster of who's going to be there. It's up to you to make those arrangements.
The other links on the popup will become active well before fest giving you specific details and maps. For those of you that worked last year it will most likely remain the same. We'll know more after the the vendors have their official meeting with the fest organizers.
Any questions can be posted here or emailed to me through the link on the popup.
Are you ready??
I said, "Are you READY?"
"HOT WOMEN!! COLD BEER!!"

Oh yea! My krewe will be signing up for sometime second weekend, soon as they get back to me. I remember how it kept us cool to stick our hands into those tubs of cold cold ice water to pull out the beer. Probly 8 of us splitting 4 shifts. Hey! No fighting over the t-shirts, kids.

LOL Ms Lena made a point to tell me that she ordered more T's this year so she had one for "all ma babies".

That was my friend Matthew (along with my Jazzfest housemate, Alicia) - he's just moved back to New Orleans and may have even marched with Zulu in Mardi Gras (as Miss Lena had extended that invitation to us).
I'm hoping I can cajol him into joining us in the tent again this year - as Matty is quite the hoot!

I'm first shift first Saturday with the Ohios. I thought I'd kickoff first Friday at Luizza's and continue that tradition, and add this new tradition to first Saturday. I have no doubt I will have FOMS the whole time, but with medication...well, perhaps I will survive.
Kitty, your pal Matty is an example of why I originally signed up to beer sling years ago at festivals around town: hugs from good looking men!!!! Very cold hands ;) ...but good to look at!!!

I wanted to work Ms. Lena's booth on Sunday morning, and then go and join the Festivities in the afternoon. I also wanted to see Theresa's set. Is it possible to split up a shift and have someone cover for me for an hour and then repay them later??? How strict is the schedule?? I guess as long as there is a body there.....

Last year Mr. Soul & I did the early shift 2nd Friday and we had to call Ms. Lena to come get us in the gate. We pre-arranged to meet her at the same gate that all the workers used. (Can't remember the name.....anybody else?)

Nope. It's the Belfort gate. The only way you can get your ticket is show up with the early group or to call Ms. Lena from the Belfort gate and have her meet you there with your ticket.

I might wander over to the volunteer gate on Friday, explain about volunteering on Sat and not wanting to use a volunteer ticket and see what they say.

That's pretty much what I did. Just said I'm volunteering and here's my Brass Pass. Of course they didn't have the scanner for the BP but they really didn't question anything. I don't think I even mentioned volunteer tickets at all.

DT, the afternoon shifts ALWAYS need bodies. We're really good (over 70 volunteers so far, including quite a few Tulane School of Public Health students who heard the call) at filling the morning shifts but these music lover types have a hard time committing to afternoons when the bigger names play. :D
(But let me assure you that Ms Lena is extremely grateful for whatever we volunteer to do. She'll happily take what she can get.)

I've posted the Volunteer Grid on www.threadheads.org (http://www.threadheads.org). It is current as of this morning. There were a few volunteers today that I haven't put on there yet but I will get them with the next update in a couple of days or so.
As you can see we're gonna be needing afternoon volunteers badly. I know those are hard shifts to fill because that's when the bigger names play. If we don't get many volunteers for those shifts give some thought to stopping by and helping out an hour or two whenever you can.
A lot of you are waiting til the cubes come out to volunteer. That's no problem. But as you can see some of the early shifts are filling up...
Thanks, guys!!

Hello,
I am thinking of signing up for one of the 2nd weekend spots, and had a couple of questions.
If I sign up for the early 10 AM shift, am I able to drop my stuff(chair, cooler, etc.) off at one of the stages even though the Fest is not open yet to the public, or do I have to keep it with me and wait until after my shift?
Also, if I'm splitting the shift with my gf, and I work 10-12, and she from 12-2, will only one of us be able to get in at 10:00, or can she set up camp while I work the early shift? I understand I would only receive 1 Free Admission, but was wondering if we'll both be able to get in together.
Thanks!

I have verified with Ms Lena that she will have only one ticket per 4-hour shift so, yes, only one of you can get in early. And the only way to get in early is to have a volunteer ticket. (My sincere apology to others that I have told wrong. See Important Note... thread.)
In the past, there have been a few things that had to be done once we get to the tent but afterwards we have had a short amount of time to kill before the gates open. You should have time to quickly go put your stuff at a stage.

So if I want to get a good spot at a particular stage, the best way to go is sign up for the early session, and then I can set up our blanket & chairs so my friend doesn't have to carry as much or make a mad dash for the stage when she comes in at 11:00?

so if we want to split shifts we work out the free deal among us. example: if SCFL & friend wanted to split a shift, and the 2 of them got in free, then me & a friend relieve them at noon, they could give us 1 ticket (total not each) and all would be fair - if all/any parties involved were worried about ticket parity. you work 1/2 shift, you earn 1/2 ticket.
not to be a tease - but i did offer to split a shift with someone previously - but i had not committed. so i need to make sure they are taken care of 1st, and then i need to con friend into volunteering also (not difficult, she's a good egg).
of course, SCFL could work 1st 1/2 bringing in gear, while friend hangs at liuzza's having cocktails until gate time. it all works.

I thought I would give this a bump and post one more time.
Anybody care to split a shift on Friday 2nd weekend for 2. My wife and I would like to work the first half of the shift 9:45 - 12:00 and then we could swap...or change places. I'll be happy to sign up. I would just like to make the arrangements in advance.
This shift is filling up and it's the only time I can work.

Hey Amy,
Are you volunteering with another person? My wife and I could take your place on the 10- 12 shift on 2nd Fri. and you could do 12-2. This way you could catch Benjy Davis.

Hey Chi, Jeff & I are already splitting that shift so I was thinking I'd send him early and I'd do late, but then I'm missing Johnny Sketch who I also like! Just wish I had waited to see the cubes before picking, I KNEW this would happen!!

It would definitely help... especially in the afternoons! Last year the afternoon lines got long and there were only 4 or 5 people working them.

Very cool, coming with a hubby who likes to keep me close (sometimes I like it, sometimes not-he just doesn't get the friend thing:( ,) but I want to help and work. That is why I will do several days without him next time but again this is our 25th anniversary gig. He wanted Jamaica AGAIN!! I won out!

There was one day last year that I was hot, thirsty and needed shade badly(very dehydrated and hungover). I stopped by Lena's and helped out for about an hour or so. It felt great to be out of the sun and surrounded by cold, cold beer. It was just what I needed.

I hope so too and I'm looking forward to meeting you. I have a hunch that we've run into one another at Fitzgeralds (Great American over the 4th) or one of the lakefront festivals (Blues Fest/"Chicagofest"). I'm home alot during the summer.

Thanks for thinking of me Amy but I can't do Sat:( . I was really trying for 2nd Friday early shift but that is now full. I am going to try to make arrangements to do 2nd Sunday early shift.
I hate to be so picky with my times but my trip this year is 2 days shorter than past years and trying to fit everything in is tough.
