Hubby and I are attending for the first time! Will be there first weekend (cause of Van and Rod!) and staying at Hilton Riverside. Anyone familiar with it? Is it walking distance to French Quarter? Can't wait - just don't know what to expect.

oh Fairy, I'm not familiar with the hotel but if you stick around this board and check out www.swagland.com for lots of unofficial info, you will be good to go!! Welcome!! Did you check out your hotel on www.tripadvisor.com? Here's the link for your hotel...it looks good and very walking distance to the Quarter. Scroll down 1/2 the page for your reviews:

You are a pretty short stroll to the Quarter, along the riverside park.

I don't know if the trolly along the river is back up and running, but if it is, that's your best bet. Just hop on and hop off at one of the 6 or 7 stops along the quarter. A couple years ago it was only $1.25. I wound up using it a lot to save my tired feet.

Judy did not sing 'clang clang clang went the streetcar'.

but then again who has heard of 'a trolley named desired'.

you might not be right, but you aint wrong:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolley
"In American English, it can refer to:
an electric streetcar, elsewhere known as a tram;"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streetcar
evidently streetcar has lots of meanings

Welcome and congrats on your first fest. Hilton Riverside has been very nice the two times we have stayed there. The River Walk was also a nice shopping area pre-Thing (katr----) connected to the Hotel, but it has not been completely restored and filled up with merchants.

Great location to enjoy walks along the river to Jackson Square. Also, for free, you can ride across the river and back on the Canal St. Ferry. This is particularly nice to do at sunset. In New Orleans, oddly enough, the sun sets on the EAST BANK of the river. So there is a beautiful effect on the skyline.

Yes the street car that travels between the Convention Center past the Hilton and to Jackson Square along the levee has been working for some time now. You are a few steps away from the Aquariam of the Americas, and all the other activities near the river.

Thanks for the welcomes, y'all - I'm so excited! I've been reading here for a couple of weeks, trying to decide whether to make the commitment to attend are not. Finally, bit the bullet and made the reservations - no refund, so I guess I'm in like Flint! The line up is just too appealing to pass up. My birthday is the week before, so this is my present!

We are having hellatious storms as I'm typing, so I think I better take cover (southeast Arkansas). Thanks again.

Streetcars...no trolleys.....

Hilton Riverside is a nice "big" hotel - and within walking/short cab ride to the quarter...you're in a good location......now, don't forget to buy your tickets in advance, you'll save some money for beer that way.....

These days, the Riverfront streetcar and the Canal streetcar are one and the same. It starts down near Esplanade, runs alongside the levee to Canal, then turns and runs up Canal St.

Maybe I'm braindead - won't be the first time - but do you mean the Esplanade BUS?

Welcome to the Bored and Jazzfest, F.L.!!!

I've stayed at the Hilton when in town for business - it is a nice, big hotel. Emphasis on the word, "big!" - which personally isn't my cup of tea when in New Orleans, but I didn't have a choice for that trip. The rooms are okay, clean - but not lavish or terribly fancy, however I usually am not in the room that much when visiting NOLA, if you know what I mean! ;)

I didn't have a problem walking to the Quarter from there or cabbing it to music venues (like Frenchmen St. - a must-see/do) and it is well-located right next to Riverwalk Place, a big mall and the Mississippi itself.

Just remember to have fun and jump into Fest with all four feet!! You'll be glad you did . . . :D
