Okay, mine has to be one of the most odd and random (fitting, I suppose) . . .
National Ice Cream and Violins Day (wha???)
Now, I used to play the violin and I do occasionally eat ice cream - however, I've never done both at the same time . . . although I do think Bach and Chunky Monkey or Vermonty Python would go well together.
It's almost as odd as the Swedish holiday celebrated on my birthday - St. Lucia's day, where the oldest daughter of the house wears a wreath of lit candles on her head and serves buns to the other members of the family.

Not long ago there was a lengthy discussion going on (on another forum) about animals going to heaven. Some people said "no way" because they don't have souls. Others claimed that they do have souls. My personal opinion is that even though the don't have souls, they do go to heaven.
It is such a perfect place - I can't imagine my beloved dogs not being there.

i sense a drift developing (another thread, perhaps?:) )...in any event, this is my "take" - It's been my experience that the animal companions I've had over the course of my life have been more loving, loyal and good-hearted than most people I've met. Couple this with the fact that they are beings created by the same Maker so with/without a soul they have a chance to return to that Maker because of the love they give us. It may not be the "same" heaven (because of the soul/no soul difference), but I hope and pray that I see these loyal and noble creatures in the next life!

All Creatures Great And Small
Elizabeth Hess
EVERY YEAR IN NEW YORK CITY AN ARKLOAD TURNS UP FOR THE ANNUAL BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS AT ST. JOHN THE DIVINE, AND THERE'S AWE IN THE AISLES
Each year on the first Sunday in October, thousands of critters--and their humans--fill New York City's Cathedral of St. John the Divine for the Blessing of the Animals. Elephants could and do fit inside this Gothic Episcopal palace, leading a garden variety of creatures in a procession complete with music and flowers. This modern-day religious spectacle began fifteen years ago as an homage to the humble St. Francis of Assisi, the Dr. Doolittle of saints, who, legend has it, dressed in rags and talked to the animals. The blessing has been a tradition since St. Francis' death in 1226, albeit not with the pageantry associated with St. John. Today, there are blessings in churches, humane societies, and cornfields across the country. At St. John's, you get a seat at an elaborate performance as well as the opportunity to take communion. At the climax, the great brass doors at the rear of the cathedral open, and a surprising number of large animals, including cows, elephants, camels and horses--hardly the usual apa rtment dwellers--leads the parade to the altar for a general blessing. (An attendant with a scooper brings up the rear.) The church is strangely quiet, until the music by Paul Winter swells with recordings of coyotes howling, and the dogs sing along. The festivities continue outdoors into the afternoon, where animals, which have included a llama, a turkey vulture, a skunk, and a tarantula, are individually touched and blessed, environmental groups distribute literature, and animals are available for adoption. For the past three years, the Very Rev. Harry H. Pritchett, Jr., cathedral dean, has been presiding over this ceremony. Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he grew up surrounded by farmland, Dean Pritchett is impressed by this very New York show of devotion to animals. "We get every shape, size, ethnicity, color, age, and socioeconomic group of people. And every year," he notes bemusedly, "someone walks some algae down the aisle."
ELIZABETH HESS: Legend has it that when St. Francis preached, the animals gathered around him to hear his sermons.
DEAN PRITCHETT: There are many famous stories about St Francis speaking with birds and other animals. He was known to be very compassionate about the whole of creation and very much involved in ministering to the poor, outcasts, and lepers. The Blessing of the Animals grew out of the celebration of St. Francis Day, around the same time that environmental concerns were beginning to be viewed as ethical issues that people of faith needed to address.
EH: Do you think there's a natural connection between outcasts and animals?
DP: The natural connection is simply that we may, in our arrogance, need to be reminded that human beings, no matter what socioeconomic state or state of health, as well as all animals, are part of the created order.
EH: Is there a special sermon for the animals?
DP: To some degree you might say that the animals preach their own sermon, because of their presence.
EH: True, just their presence in the cathedral speaks volumes. Do you believe that animals have souls? There's been some debate around this question.
DP: I don't know. I think we have to treat them as if they do. I think human beings are created to collaborate and cooperate with all of creation and not use it to the detriment of the whole, as we have done sometimes with animals. When animals are mistreated, that destroys us all. Whether animals individually have souls or not, I don't know. But when you look into the eyes of your dog, you just cannot imagine there not being some spirit, somewhere.
EH: Have you had any sad moments or encounters?
DP: I spoke with a man last year who had brought his dog to the blessing for five years. It had recently died, so this year he came with its picture.
EH: Do people bring animals who have been sick or injured?
DP: Isabella Rossellini was here one year with a wounded animal found in Central Park. The animal had been nursed back to health and was going to be rereleased into the park. I remember her holding it close.
EH: Where do the large animals come from?
DP: Well, mostly they're brought by their owners. It's not absolutely necessary to have the large animals, but the range from the elephant to the algae gets across the idea of all creation.
EH: What personally do you take away from the Blessing of the Animals? How has it affected you?
DP: This is an incredible spectacle: the liturgy, the animal presence, the color, the dance, the music, the pulpits covered in a million sunflowers. The surprise for me is that there are moments of what I can only describe as a holy silence--the quiet of the animals in this incredible space during the closing procession. My children would call these moments "awesome." One becomes aware, at least I become aware, of my part in the total created order. That's such a humbling experience.

To enhance the drift:
I think it depends on how one defines "soul" - I would have to vote on the side of "yes," animals do have a soul.
When watching penguins, polar bears and otters playing and sliding on the snow and/or water - I know they have a soul, but maybe it's a different type of soul than human animals have.
Discuss . . .

Yeah, you right, Padre!! Having lived with animal siblings my whole life - I just cannot believe that animals don't think, don't feel and don't love. However, it would be nutty to anthropomorphise them - they're not humans, they have a different way of being.

Can I add my 2 cents????
My son was having a bad day earlier this week and was feeling particularly blue. When I tucked him in, our dog, Patrick, stayed on the bed with him, which is unusual. Patrick usually likes to be with the adults. He layed upstairs with my son for a good 30 minutes before he came downstairs. My son walked out to the top of the steps and said "I think he knew I was sad, Mom." Out of the mouths of babes......
I have always said that I like my dog better than 90% of the people I know. I can't believe the Creator wouldn't want to be surrounded by the innocent creatures that he/she created if he/she can tolerate the rest of us clowns.
Just my opinion, for what it's worth.

As the bumper sticker says, "I hope one day to be half the person my dog thinks I am!". And keep in mind that GOD spelled backwards....:D
