Taxi rates in New Orleans have gone up.
The new rates are $3.50 for the first 1/8 mile, 25 cents for each 1/8 mile after that, and $22/hour when not moving. This is up from the old rates of $2.50 for the drop, 20 cents per 1/8 mile, and $18/hour for traffic time. The charge of $1 for each extra passenger remains. The fuel surcharge (was $1-2 per trip) has been dropped.
The flat rates have also increased. Airport trips are now $33 for 1-2 people, or $14/person for 3 or more (up from $28 and $12/person).
The special event rate is now $5/person (up from $4) or the meter rate, whichever is higher. This includes trips to and from the Fairgrounds for Jazzfest.
The $10 minimum for moving luggage between hotels remains unchanged, as does the $10 minimum for trips to & from the Greyhound & Amtrak station.
You can see a T-P article on this here (http://www.nola.com/news/t-p/neworleans/index.ssf?/base/news-11/1248499212327160.xml&coll=1) (ignore the confusing headline). One glitch of note:
The latest version [of the ordinance] clears up most of the legal issues, but it still appears to contain one mistake. It says the... "waiting time" charge, when a cab is not moving or is stuck in slow traffic, will be 20 cents for every 40 seconds.
In fact, ever since the higher rates went into effect starting July 2, the waiting time charge also has gone up by increments of 25 cents, not 20 cents. It appears that the cabs' electronic meters cannot be programmed to rise by 25 cents for mileage and by 20 cents for waiting.
