Hey all you festvets. Maybe you can drop a few names of the best places to set camp?
The mate and I are looking for something close to the action, or at least within a reasonable (and navigible(not a word)) walking distance. Cost matters... we're far from VIPing it. But we're classy vagabonds and will consider all options.
Thanks Bunches!
From my web page:
There's no lodging right at the Fairgrounds, so if your budget allows, the obvious choice is to stay in or near the French Quarter. The Downtown / Superdome / Convention Center areas are adjacent to the Quarter, up to about a mile away. Most of the hotels are in this area, or in the Quarter. Expect rooms to be cheaper, the farther away from downtown you get.
Rule of thumb for Jazzfest lodging: You naturally want three things... low-prices, high quality, and good location. Now, pick two out of three.

The French Quarter is about 2-3 miles from the Fairgrounds; some people do like to make the walk up Esplanade. There will be a lot of traffic during Fest days, but I think it would be relatively safe. However, cheap and decent accommodations are hard to come by.
Check out the travel section of Swag's site, swagland.com. He can give you a good overview of the situation.

If you are carless, you can ride the city bus to the FG. You can also save $ by buying your food at the Fairgrounds, putting it in ziplocs, and taking to your hotel room. You can check out swag's site for lots of info. Hotwire and priceline could be the way to go on a hotel room. Hopefully a real deal will come thru closer to fest time. So to leave that option open, you could get a hotel room with a good cancellation policy, just in case you're able to snag a room for $60 or $70.

Try the larger hotel websites for their extended stay/business traveler hotels, e.g. Hilton: Garden Inn, Embassy Suite, Homewood Suite or Mariott: Residence Inn, Springhill Suite... You'll find most of these located in the CBD/Whse District which is the most convenient to all parts of town via car or taxi. Also a lot quieter if you do decide to sleep at all. Just make sure to request a room above ground level.
