They're playing tonight at the MS Museum of Art downtown. I'm probably going anyway (a good excuse to knock off scraping and caulking early) since they're playing with Patrick Harkins, but any input from people who've heard them will be appreciated. It will make it easier to talk the husband into going if I have something to tell him other than that they're a brass band from NOLA.

Yeah Paul is right, their myspace page has an accurate descrition of their sound:

http://www.myspace.com/soulrebelsbrassband

"Imagine blending the sounds of Mardi Gras funk, soft rock, and reggae so seemingly it defies category. Now shrink that idea into a seven-piece ensemble, add a hip hop sensibility plus a hundred years of New Orleans jazz tradition, and you’ll get the Louisiana sound known as the Soul Rebels. This shrewd crew of college trained multi-instrumentalists are forcing listeners to “Let your mind be free” as they “Work it out” on the dance floor. There music is utterly uplifting and hard core leaving fans with a myriad of intrinsic sounds and songs to enjoy. "

They are right: Rock, Hip-Hop and Reggae are all there, but the jazzy funk is the part that drives you to the dance floor. And the musical "Soul" in this band is today's version, not the 70s pop variety. Look for a song in the play called "We Rock The Party" that seems to me to get their live sound across the best.

Hiuge hit both times they visited our Jazz Fest...both times "on"

Delta, they're one of my faves! Their energy (used to be, they NEVER took any breaks between songs - just morphing from one to the next) and their creative musicality is off the hook!

I say y'all should DEFINITELY check them out!

I'm definitely sold on them after listening to the myspace stuff. The Art remix thing at the museum is new here but patterned after one in Birmingham so I'm interested to see how that works out. We've known Patrick Harkins since he was a kid too, so we like to show our support for him.

Throw in my vote for "ON"!

We had so much fun closing the Fest Saturday at a small stage (Heritage) with Midnight Disturbers that we opted to go back and do the same for Soul Rebels on Sunday. GREAT time, super funky, and rowdy as hell. I thought the hip-hop sounded great, too. Can't vouch for 'em on the road but they had that Fest crowd fired up.
