View Full Version : Surgery tomorrow

Blitzzzzz

Haven't been around much lately, I've been getting ready for double knee replacement which happens tomorrow. I just checked in to catch up on things and tap the great pool of Threadhead energy I've come to know from being part of this board. Any positive energy that you care to direct my way will be greatly appreciated, as I trade in my old knees for a new pair that should make Festing more like the pleasure it once was.
Also, if anyone has insights to share from going through this, pass them along. I've got a great surgeon and help from family and friends here, but experience is the best teacher so I'm all ears.
Thanks, Blitzzzzz!

Oh yeah, I can feel it already!
Apparently so, only two in my pre-op class, but I only get 12 weeks of leave under FMLA, so unless I want to wait a year and go through it again, double is the way to go.
Going be off the radio until I get cleared to drive (5-6 weeks,) that may be the toughest part!

Good luck Joe. A good friend went though this a year or so ago. I recall that they had him up and moving sooner than I would have expected; but obviously he was quite limited for several weeks. I know he read a lot, listened to lots of music and watched a lot of movies. The best news is that he is more active now than he had been in many, many years beforehand. He was a pretty active guy before the surgery, but he experienced a lot of pain and a lot of injuries. He's like the energizer bunny now, always off to some type of physical activity, and in great shape.

My mother-in-law had that not long ago, both knees at once, and it went GREAT! Really improved her life, and the recovery/rehab, while not being exactly easy (won't lie to you) was a lot less than had been anticipated. As for doing it at once, it's becoming more the norm. Whether one or two, you're immobilized, so better to get it all over with at once and have a shorter recovery period.

You'll do great! we just know it...

YYR, Cisco - best advice is to DO THE REHAB!! My Mom has had both knees replaced (not at once) and was obsessive about doing all the rehab (and more) as prescribed, and she is now doing great - it is much much easier for her to get around now. I've heard of others who slacked on the rehab and the results were not nearly as good.

Best of luck!

they wanted me walking 1 mile with no support within 6 weeks of the surgery. i was off the walker, crutches, cane in less than 5 and walking a mile and a half when i went back in 6 weeks. i just kept saying to myself ok we have to go from acura to gentily, jazz to economy hall and it worked :) glad about mom!

Good luck Blitzz and please report back. I have to have this done at some point but the Dr wants me to hold on as long as I can.

I was told 38 is to young to have it done but I don't get around real well either. I can walk and cut grass and that's about it.

best advice is to DO THE REHAB!!
I have not followed that advice in my knee surgeries up until now and it shows.

Good Luck, Man!!!!

I add to Do The Therapy!!! I did therapy before & after my knee surgery (wasn't replacement, but surgery none the less) ..... recovery time is a lot less. I actually was in a group therapy situation (fill in your own joke here ;)). It mad it easier knowing you weren't the only one!

HI, Joe,
Just saw your post, so this info maybe too late to help.
The Four most important things after surgery are as follows:
1. Pain management
2. Physical therapy
3. Ice
3. Physical therapy

I don't know how your post surgical pain will be managed, but you may want to take a look at this web site:

http://www.askyoursurgeon.com/painreliefoptions.php#c

The on-Q C block is the best option, IMO, as opposed to an Epidural due to mobility issues and the fact you won't need a catheter to void. Narcotics are bad because they are systemic and come with a basket full of side effects. I used a C-Block following shoulder surgery last October and it's great.

Also, see if your doc can get you a machine called "The Ice Man". It's a very wonderful device that pumps chilled water to the surgical site and recirculates it in a cloth radiator-like apparatus. Your insurance will probably cover it as long as it is M.D. prescribed.

Go to every P.T. appointment. And make sure you like working with your therapist. You two will be a very close team for the next couple of months.

You'll have 6-8 weeks of hard work, but it'll be worth it.
Good luck tomorrow!

My 75-year-old Dad had one knee done 2 weeks ago today and is doing great. He was in the hospital for 4 days, got out of inpatient rehab today. They've worked him hard; did stair climbing this weekend. He complains more about muscle soreness at his hip and ankles than at the knee--so it's more from new exercise of little-used muscles than pain at the surgery site.

All the best to you and with a little work you'll be better than new in no time.

Good luck and best wishes.
Many years ago I broke my ankle on both sides which ended up being 2 weeks in hospital another 6 in plaster and then at least another 6 weeks of no weight bearing while the screws and pins did what they were meant to do.
Anyway I did all the rehab plus more including stacks of swimming when the plaster came off exercise bike, then on to mini trampoline and finaly weight bearing then physio the first day of which was like torture as they tried to stretch my Achiles for the first time in several months.
The bottom line is that even after doing all of the above, and more exercises than I was meant to,because I wanted to get back to playing Football again,my right calf muscle still ended up slightly smaller than my left and is still the same today.
So it will be a case of no pain no gain, done sensibly of course,I stupidly pushed myself and there was a chance,I could have made things worse.

It will good for you to grace the dance floor again.

Tidal wave of positive healing energy from the West Coast! Good Luck on your surgery....a lot of healing comes from your own brain....think lots of positive thoughts about your knees. Try to imagine the muscles and all getting better and stronger. When recovering from my shoulder/arm injury, I used to think about the pain, what was its shape, its color, it made the pain easier to manage.
I know some folks will think these ideas are goofy...but they really really work!
Good Luck!

What Deni said ring true down here as well.Mama Gards was in rehab hospital recently getting over a shoulder reco and I think that the old school teacher came out in her again as she ripped in to the doctors and nurses for trying to give her the runaround or denying her the medication she needed.
Anyway she is now coming good having pushed along slowly but surely due to being 80 and is now planning to get the other one done so that she will not have to live in constant pain for years to come. She has been positive
and wishes good Karma to all those working through the recovery process as we speak.

It's hard to believe it's only been two weeks, but I've been cleared to head home on Friday morning! Things are coming along nicely, I'm walking with two canes, and covering lots of ground. Two more sessions of PT here, and then off to out patient 3-4 times a week for more range of motion and strength training. I'm going to stay with my sister for about a week before I attempt my bachelor style homestead. In the meantime, I'm getting a couple of new hand rails and grab bars installed to help keep me upright.
Thanks to everyone who has sent good wishes and all those who've kept me in your thoughts. Please keep it up as the PT is the biggest challenge of all as it's easier to let it slide now that the worst has past. I truly appreciate all the energy and karma!

Imagine this:

You're in the Gospel Tent, wringing with sweat, because the Zion Harmonizers have just left the stage... You're bathed in a joyful glow, but as the crowd filters out, you hear the unmistakable buzzsaw sounds of Neil Young, ripping it up on Ol' Black.

Oh yeah, you remember now that he's playing on the Acura Stage, right across the track.

You head over, but the walkway is PACKED, beacuse the set's underway, and because, well, he's Neil Young!

You know your friends are camped near the soundboard, but no way can you shuffle along that walkway - it ain't moving.

If only you'd pushed a little harder at PT, you'd be able to hit the track and swing around the crowds, pick up a six pack for your thirsty friends (and you), and high step it over in time for Neil's first-ever Jazz Fest appearance.

But, since you wimped out and didn't do the exercises, you're unable to navigate the track, or the Acura crowds, and you settle for Dash Rip Rock and Benny Grunch at the Lagniappe Stage, just because it's easier to find a seat there...

Later on, your buds tell you that Neil KILLED IT, leaving nothing on the stage, and where were you? because your favorite bartender from da Quarter found your friends, even if you couldn't, and she had smuggled in a quart of your favorite (_______), which she dished out to every one but you, because you weren't there...

What?!

It could happen.

So Blitzzzzz, better get on it. :p Like Chrissa said: The road to Jazz Fest leads through PT... or sumpin' like that.

Keep your eyes on the prize, bro.

We're pullin' for ya.

Thanks for the nightmare scenario, Freebo! That will be quite a vision to keep in mind when I'm doing the impossible bends!

Hey Friends,
Been offline for a bit, but I wanted to check in and let everyone know that things are going well. I'm not dancing yet, but I'm walking with one cane, and strong enough to MC a local festival this past weekend. I've got shinny pink scars and a pretty square gait, too.
Still have more rehab to do, but I seem to be out of the woods as far as major issues go. I just have to keep bending and stretching and working on the walk.
Thanks to everyone who passed on their good wishes, and those who only paused to think positive thoughts as well!
You all are the best!

Yesterday the wife and I went to this event at Skipper's Smokehouse:

SUNDAY AUG 16
Benefit concert for Cindy Lou DeSantis
Buffalo Strange; Cope; The Juan Jamon Band; Glory Road; Sunset Bridge (BENEFIT/JAMBAND) An anthropology major at Eckerd college with a 3.75 GPA, Cindy Lou is battling Stage 3 ovarian cancer; she's post surgery and receiving chemo. This seemingly unstoppable young lady was planning on studying the rituals of the indigenous people in Ecuador this summer when she was diagnosed. For now, those plans are on hold while she's healing but hopes are high that next summer she'il be able to resume. As if all this wasn't enough, Cindy Lou is also a volunteer at CASA with the legal advocates at the courthouse in the injunction room.

A well attended show: I'd estimate around 200 to 250 people, which is GREAT for a Sunday night. The venue donated all the door, the bands donated their time, a raffle event AND a silent auction were kickin' it... I'll tell ya, most all the kind community of Tampa were there, showing our love for Cindy. It was like a super cool private party at a wonderful outdoor venue. And while I wish it weren't for such a sad cause, I've still got my glow on from attending... That and the beautiful, hand-made coffee table we won at the silent auction. :)

Seriously: Cindy looked real good, but her recovery is just under way - so please hold her in your thoughts as well. We KNOW the power of Threadhead healing vibrations, and by combining our efforts with that of the Tampa krewe, I know Cindy will come through this, for sure!

Thanks yall - especially Blitzzzzz, for letting me drift his thread a bit.

Peace
