this was on Facebook, linked from a note saying that the funding is being threatened for the Festival International:

STAND UP FOR FESTIVAL!
We want to educate our Councilmen and the community-at-large on what we provide in dollars and cents to our community; moreover, why Festival International de Louisiane began in the first place. We would love for you to share your voice with your Councilman as well as media outlets like The Daily Advertiser, The Advocate, The Independent, KATC TV3, KPEL, etc. – tell them what Festival International means to you and your community; consequently, why they should continue to support YOUR Festival. In the meantime, below are some numbers you can be proud of…YOUR donation of personal time and/or dollars directly influences Festival International de Louisiane’s ability to give so much back to our City, our Parish and our State:

Based on the economic impact study done in 2008, it’s estimated that Festival International generates a $22 million economic impact, providing an astounding return on Lafayette City/Parish Government’s modest investment:

LCG Investment: $72,000
Estimated Tax Revenue: $927,094
Total Gain: $855,094
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: 842%

This funding issue is obviously vital to the overall success of our organization. LCG’s investment in Festival International reflects 19% of our organization’s overall support and has incredible reach. It signals to other funding sources like state, federal and even foreign support, as well as other granting entities, that we are indeed worthy of their investment. LCG’s investment in Festival also impacts the retention of, as well as the attraction of, young professionals and businesses alike to our community thus adding to our future tax base. And, LCG’s investment in Festival International provides an exceptional return on investment that supplements our tax base which therein provides hard dollars that allow LCG to continue to do the work of the people. Currently, Festival International’s estimated economic impact is at the $22 million mark, which equates to quite a substantial figure in tax revenue.

I hope it fails handily.

LAFAYETTE — A proposal by two Lafayette City-Parish Council members to halt supplemental funding for nonprofit groups does not appear to have traction with a majority of the nine-member council.

At least five council members, enough to kill the measure, have said they have serious concerns about the proposal, with four of those five saying they plan to vote against it.

Council members William Theriot and Jared Bellard introduced an ordinance at Tuesday’s council meeting to cut the $400,000 to $500,000 that local government has been giving annually to Lafayette arts groups and social service organizations.

The proposal, which calls for the funding to be phased out over the next three years, is up for a final vote July 21.

“No way,” council Chairman Purvis Morrison said Wednesday when asked his feelings about the proposal. “The nonprofits play a very vital role in our community. … We are talking less than 1 percent of the budget.”

Councilmen Kenneth Boudreaux and Jay Castille also said Wednesday they plan to oppose the measure in its current form.

“It’s going to be hard to cut it, because they do so much for the community,” Castille said. more (http://www.2theadvocate.com/news/acadiana/50316572.html)
