We had the pleasure of being the last stop on the recent X tour (having seen them previously a number of times). This time we were able to take my youngest daughter, for her live introduction to a classic American punk/rock band!

Some pics from this (and previous) X shows can be seen at http://www.flickr.com/photos/fantailmedia/sets/72157620628474441/

(Also, just saw Dr. John and the Lower 911 on Tuesday, and we're heading out to hear Robert Cray and his band tonight. Things are pretty musical on the other end of the river, too!)

How old is your daughter, and what did she think of them?

She's 15; she loved the show. She's been to Nick Lowe, Dirty Dozen, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, Dumpstaphunk/Soul Live/Al Green, etc.

Billy Zoom in Profile .... looks like Bill Clinton!!

L.A. TH's - DJ has a great jazz band - Bonebrake Syncopaters. He plays a mean Vibraphone!! They'll be at the Farmer's Market for a free show Friday 8/21.

My daughters (ages 3, 8 and 10) have all seen a lot of shows already, mostly in the festival environment. My ten year old fell for Shorty at Crawfish Fest last month (Big Sam too, but Shorty moreso). I'm wondering if he had a similar effect on your daughter.

X is cool. My favorite punk band of all time.

neat to see the pix - i seem to recall billy liked to wear all black leather with the pompadour in full glisten + just stand out over the crowd. at least in 1984.

now, the cramps were a great band to see in that kind of venue...

Thanks for sharing. How did Exene look? She was diagnosed with MS recently. I would love to see them again. I did see them in 1988 with Warren Zevon at the old Storyville club that is now Margaritaville. I still remember that show. X was great and so was WZ.

say - did they play any of dave alvin's material or just X? he has a song "9 volt heart" that is probably his reason for being.

i think dave + x trace their connections back to the LA early 80s...and dave, dj and john doe ended up playing in a band called the divine horsemen (later flesheaters) - that would probably be the most dangerous iteration of those guys...the knitters being the most stylistic.

I saw Dave Alvin with the Blasters at Jimmy's in '85 (I think). The guitarist shuffle went down about that time because I was quite surprised to see Dave playing with X at the same club just a couple of months later.

Last time I saw X (3 or 4 years ago) I noticed what looked like a father and his about 12 yo son. The kid looked bored, so I figured that Dad was the X fan and had brought him to show him what he missed in the '80s. They were near the front and Dad was getting pissed about the occasional bump from the mosh pit. Seems like he would have known.

9 Volt Heart was co-written with the Iguanas and they've recorded it too.

Trivia (no Googling): who was Exene's second husband?

Last couple of times I saw her, she was quite heavy. Once she was perfoeming and seemed the same. The other time was at a social event. She moved a little slow, but was ok.

Saw Knitters shortly after X, again with Dave, then Blasters not long after, but Dave was with Guilty Men at that point. About the same time, Chris Gaffney left Dave and started Hacienda Bros. RIP Gaff!

I didn't know about her diagnosis of MS. I saw them last month and she didn't look good and seemed detatched. Too bad...

This last tour was the original line-up, without Dave Alvin, so it was all X. I didn't realize it but apparently it was an "all request" tour, where they tallied up the most requested songs for the set list. They played 'em all.

I'm not sure if she's still married to him, or if it was her second husband, but Vigo Mortensen (I'm not sure if I'm getting it right)?

We have a winner! One of her bandmates (the Original Sinners, not X) is presently #3.

Glad folks appreciated the pics! We've just been out to Portland (OR), and got a chance to see Big Sam's Funky Nation (all three gigs), along with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings (who closed the Bluesfest, playing after Sam's crew).

Great good fun; we're hoping someone can get Sam and the Nation booked up here in MSP, too.

Exene had good energy, once the band got rolling, and it was an excellent show. (I love that "9 Volt Heart" tune, btw. X only played their own stuff, though).

A lot of people are heavier than they were thirty years ago (but not me;-).

Dr. John was in fine form, at his recent show up here; even played a little guitar.
